Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Here comes the Cat in the Hat to take us on a journey through our solar system. Told in the Cat's signature classic style of verse, readers are invited to hop in the space craft along with Thing One and Thing Two (your mothers won't mind) to "dance on the moon and play games in the sky." Join along as they stop at each planet and learn at least one fact along the way, too. After visiting each planet, the Cat reveals a few constellations: Orion, Taurus, Leo, Ursa Major—and using your imagination you can see how they came to be named. Then it is on to the closest star, the sun, followed by their final stop at the moon. After studying the mysteries of the universe the Cat presents two earthlings a gift of a telescope, perfect for budding astronomers. Ruiz's illustrations certainly do justice to the original Cat in the Hat stories, with hardly an interruption in style and creativity. One point of conversation in this revised edition may be the omission of Pluto, recently removed from the roster of planets. In the era of political correctness Pluto could have been mentioned, but it is neglected entirely. That alone can serve as a fodder for follow-up discussions with the book. Following the engaging text are a brief glossary, suggestions for further reading, and an index. This is a great addition to the "Cat in the Hat" collections as well as a nonfiction choice for space books in your library. Reviewer: Elizabeth Young
From The Critics
K-Gr 3-Fans of Dr. Seuss's favorite feline will enjoy learning through rhymed couplets and cartoonlike illustrations similar to the originals. Each book combines basic facts with interesting trivia to introduce readers to topics that are sure to be of interest. From Bugs: "Here is a riddle/I learned from my mother./How's a skunk and a ladybug/like one another?/When danger is near,/it is easy to tell-/they suddenly give off/a terrible smell!" While the grammar is off, Seussian rhyme is rarely totally correct ("thunk"). In Space, readers learn, "On Venus the weather/is always the same-/hot, dry, and windy,/with no chance of rain." The familiar format and entertaining text are sure to appeal to beginning readers.-Maura Bresnahan, Shawsheen School, Andover, MA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|

Learning can be so much fun

My 5 year old has taken a particular interest in learning all of the planets and also happens to be wild about The Cat in the Hat now as well. This book was a perfect fit with a fun story that is teaching valuable information as well. Names each of the nine planets and also has the sun and moon included. Easy to read with cute illustrations and the refreshing Dr. Seuss flair in the text. Great for boys or girls and also would make a great gift for birthday, Valentine's Day, Easter, etc. Highly recommend this one. We have read it over and over in the short time we have had this book.

    more from this reviewer

Rave Reviews for ALL Dr. Seuss books!!!

This with four (4) other Dr. Seuss books is a Christmas present for our almost 4 year old grandson. We purchased thirteen Dr. Seuss books for him from B & N before he was born...this was the beginning of his own personal library. He loves Dr. Seuss books and others as well. His parents read to him all the time; they are heavy readers; we are heavy readers; our other son is also a heavy reader. I began to read when I was three-four years old. (I was born in 1944) My husband is a very heavy reader. So, if you want your child, children, or grandchildren to be good life long readers, Dr. Seuss is the best way to begin...then they can eventually go on to other great writers!!!

    Fantastic and age appropriate

My preschooler loves to read these series. She likes the information, pictures and rhyming. Now even my 19 month old enjoys them, too. They are great fun for my husband and I to read as well.
We also have "Oh the things you can do that are good for you" by Tish Rabe and "Oh say can you seed?" by Bonnie Worth Both are illustrated by Aristides Ruiz These are great fun as well! I highly recommend them for your home library! And great for gifts, too.

    WOW!

This book got me absolutely hooked on the Cat in the Hat's Learning Library! My three year old son LOVES it and to hear him tell me that the sun is a hot, big, star is AMAZING! I can't wait to add more of these books to our Learning Library collection!
