Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Relatives and their relationships are more difficult than ever to keep straight in these days of half-siblings and stepparents. On the occasion of her birthday party, a young girl tries to keep track of how she is related to them cumulatively as guests arrive, including cousin, aunt and uncle, grandparents, and great-grandparents. All gather around the table to celebrate the birthday of the girl who is so many things to so many people, but really "only one." Hutchins shows the dining table gradually fill with the goodies brought by each relative along with their interactions. Her flat colored drawings, done in pen and ink and felt-tipped markers, define fabric patterns and foods while creating a civil environment of good spirits and growing anticipation leading to the greeting of the heroine. The curious family cat adds comic bits to each double-page scene. Children can figure out their own complicated family patterns after watching this one. 2003, Greenwillow Books/HarperCollins Publishers,

PreS-2-This read-along version of the book written and illustrated by Pat Hutchins (Greenwillow, 2003) is simply charming. It is the cumulative story of a young girl explaining her relationship to various members of her family-mother, siblings, stepfather, cousins, aunts and uncles, and grandparents-as they arrive for her birthday party. Each additional person leads the girl to review all the relationships. The young child is pleased that "It's nice to be so many things when there's only ONE OF ME!" Background instrumental music and faint sound effects fade in during each review and out when a new relationship is revealed. Suzanne Toren reads expressively with the wonder of a young child discovering new relationships, yet at a pace slow enough to allow time for listeners to read along and enjoy the book's vibrant illustrations. One side of the audio contains page-turn signals. A great choice for family story times.-Stephanie Bange, Wilmington-Stroop Branch, Dayton Metro Library, OH Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Celebrating all the roles that she has within her own family, one birthday girl explores her sometimes complex relationships with each of its members. Every time the door opens, a new person enters the room bearing something for the party. The little girl explains how she's related to each, reviewing her relationship to those already present. "I'm my mother's daughter," she says as her mother enters bearing the cake. The entry of another young girl bearing a large bowl prompts, "I'm my sister's sister. (AND my mother's daughter too!)" By the time her great-grandmother enters bearing a platter of cookies, the list is quite long and explains her relationship to a step-parent, siblings, half-siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Finally, she lets readers in on her final role of the day: birthday girl. Brightly colored illustrations in bold primary colors feature the members of the ever-growing party in their many-patterned outfits. Unfortunately the paintings are slightly cluttered by the overly bright and busy backgrounds that compete for attention. But readers familiar with Hutchins's other classic works will delight in her exploration of the various familial roles and may want to work out their own. (Picture book. 4-6)

Meet the Author

Pat Hutchins, one of seven children, was born in Yorkshire, England, and grew up in the surrounding countryside, which she still loves. At a very early age she knew that she wanted to be an artist and was encouraged by an elderly couple who would give her a chocolate bar for each picture she drew. A local art school offered her a scholarship and she studied there for three years, continuing her training at Leeds College of Art, where she specialized in illustration. Her career in the children's book field began with the highly acclaimed Rosie's Walk, a 1968 ALA Notable Book. Since then she has written five novels and created more than twenty-five picture books. She was awarded England's prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal in 1974 for The Wind Blew. Pat Hutchins lives with her husband in London, England.

    Nicely explains family relationships

A cumulative story in which a young girl describes her relationship with all the family members attending her birthday party. Each relative carries a dish filled with goodies to the birthday table which has a variety of mix matched chairs symbolically representing the various relatives in a blended family. The family cat is in every double spread page definitely enjoying being part of the family. This is a great choice for story time encouraging student participation, while easily explaining family relationships.
