Overview

In 1992 the Hep record label brought out a swinging collection of jazz recordings made during the years 1944-1946 by the Royal Air Force Dance Orchestra, more commonly known as the Squadronaires. Composed largely of skilled professional players who performed regular military service during the day and spent their evenings boosting morale with top-notch musical entertainment, this group was widely regarded as one of the very best bands of its day. The Squadronaires were led by vocalist Jimmy Miller. Noteworthy participants include trumpeter Tommy McQuater, trombonist George Chisholm, reedmen Tommy Bradbury, and Andy McDevitt, and pianist Ronnie Aldrich. Arrangements are credited to saxophonist Jimmy Durrant. Aside from the obligatory ballads and novelty tunes, the repertoire as demonstrated here reflects a keen collective knowledge of traditional jazz ("Runnin' Wild," "Darktown Strutters' Ball," "High Society," and "South Rampart Street Parade"), as well as contemporary big-band material that helped pave the way for sweeping stylistic changes during the late '40s ("Cherokee," "Tuxedo Junction," "Flying Home," "Pompton Turnpike," and "Hey! Ba-Ba-Re-Bop"). Ideal for drinking and dancing, this music is sure to come in handy while mopping floors, waxing propellers, and oiling your Webley Service Revolver.
