the Life and Ministry of Elijah

Known for his in-depth yet accessible teaching, beloved author R. T. Kendall delves into the life of one of the most famous and most relatable persons in the Old Testament: Elijah.

Drawn from a popular sermon series Dr. Kendall preached at Westminster Chapel in London, this discussion taken from 1 and 2 Kings traces the prophet's life and ministry from his first appearance and his confrontation with King Ahab until the time he is taken up to heaven. Kendall shows how even this revered prophet--an ordinary man with many imperfections--was used tremendously by God. A great study for both individuals and groups.

Elijah is what all Christians strive to be faithful. Elijah did what God instructed and nothing could deter him from being obedient to God. As the author states, Elijah was truly a prophet who heard and believed God. There’s so much to gain if we put our trust and faith in God. His plan us for is larger than the plans we have for ourselves when we seek his will. God was always working on Elijah’s behalf. He used a brook to provide water for him to drink and ravens brought him food to eat. He will provide for us. When we are faced with trials and challenges, it’s God’s way of getting our attention. As the author discusses, being a Christian does not eliminate us from problems. Chapter 6 briefly explains what it means to be “in and out” of season. When we are out of season and God hides his face is when we have the opportunity to please God through faith. God is continuously working for us and without faith, it’s impossible to please him. God will test us and He also uses those least expected and takes us out of our comfort zone. But we also must trust him. The story of Elijah demonstrates what we can achieve through our faith. Having the opportunity to read this book was truly a blessing. Thanks Chosen Books for allowing me for review this book free of charge.

If you enjoy diving deep into scripture and really taking it down and understanding it, than you will enjoy this book. Each chapter focuses on a specific part of the scripture that talks about Elijah. The author takes the scripture to a place that we can really understand and believe that God can use anybody He chooses. What I really enjoyed was reading this book right after I read Reign: The Chronicles of Queen Jezebel. It really gave a new understanding to read the fiction book first that has Elijah in it and then dive into the scripture. The author takes you all the way from Elijah giving the prophecy of no rain until he is taken up into Heaven and Elisha takes over. Elijah really was just a normal guy who was prideful at times and made mistakes just like us, but God used him in a powerful way. The main idea that I took away from this book was that even though I can fall so far from all God wants for me He can still use me and He can use you too. A copy of this book was given to me by Chosen Books in exchange for an honest review.
