A WAR WITHIN

Colonel Ray Longknife and Marine Captain Mary Rodrigo were once enemies in an interstellar war. Now they’re working together to keep the peace. But can they protect themselves from an enemy they can’t even see?

When a bad space jump flings their starship thousands of light-years away from home, Longknife and Rodrigo make an amazing discovery: a planet inhabited by the descendants of a ship’s crew—lost three hundred years earlier.

As acting ambassador, Longknife is eager to welcome the planet’s population back into the fold of humanity. But Rodrigo is suspicious. She senses that something is wrong under the planet’s veneer of peace and prosperity. And she’s right....

KLIATT
Ray Longknife is a wounded war veteran hobbling on canes and determined to use his new role of bureaucrat to keep a peace painfully bought by civil war. However, on an interstellar jump to a meeting, the engines misfire due to sabotage, and Ray and his military escort are flung randomly through the jumpgate, far across the galactic disk, out of fuel and without reference points. Picking up a 300-year-old distress signal, they find a thriving colony descended from a ship lost during the earlier experimental voyages. Two local children find an unfolding box and accidentally evaporate a mountaintop. In response, an ancient artificial intelligence (AI) integrated into the composition of the planet itself wakes up and begins to question what's going on. Under its subliminal prodding, the residents perpetrate violent acts and in an effort to determine the cause, Ray's doctor finds not only viruses in all the humans' blood but brain tumors as well, particularly well developed in Ray and a small group of albino children. The increased attempts of the splintered AI to control the humans are driving them further into rampages that Ray tries to use his small numbers of soldiers to stop. In addition, the AI has turned the weather patterns into weapons, they can't return home with the virus contamination, and most dangerous of all, the renegade children still have the box. Steadily engrossing, extremely well plotted, very believable on all levels, an excellent read.
