Overview

They Call It Hypnosis paints a clear picture of what hypnosis is and is not, what it can and cannot accomplish, and how it can be misused and abused. Baker describes its potential for preventing or arresting pain and outlines future directions for the role of suggestion in the clinic and the laboratory. This engrossing, factual book is a definitive study of hypnosis that illuminates this very unique aspect of creative human behavior.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
YA-- A scholarly yet readable study of an often misunderstood subject. In seven well-written and well-documented chapters, Baker provides a virtual cornucopia of information on hypnosis. The history, misconceptions, facts, applications, abuses, and uses of this termed ``altered state of consciousness'' are all included. The author offers a thoughtful and clear analysis of current subject research and supports his conclusions with his own as well as the viable data of other researchers in the field. A subtheme is the use of imagination in processing information. This valuable reference work is clearly indexed and categorized. In addition, the excellent source references allow students to venture out and to expand their knowledge bases. A book that will encourage readers to explore the scientific world of psychology.-- Nancy Craig, R . E. Lee High School , Springfield, VA
Booknews
Psychologist Baker traces the history and current status of hypnosis, reviewing the role played by suggestion and examining the major contemporary theories and misconceptions regarding the phenomenon. Current research points to the conclusion that there is no state of altered consciousness produced by hypnosis and that what we term hypnosis is in fact a complex hybrid of social compliance, relaxation, and suggestibility that can account for many esoteric behavioral manifestations, including such occult behavior as past-life regression, UFO "abduction," channeling, and glossolalia (speaking in "tongues"). Disappointing

There are some interesting chapters in this book, but overall it is lacking. Besides often seeming to be just an arguing of semantics, it doesn't touch on many of the hypnotic phenomena that would be expected. Since he is mainly saying hypnosis as such doesn't exist, I would have liked to see how he dealt with many hypnotic issues. Instead, he gets off into other avenues, which while interesting, don't answer the debate he begins.
