Secrets lurk under the smooth surface of a wealthy Connecticut neighborhood, until a murder reveals all

Sofie and her husband have left Manhattan in search of a more tranquil life in the suburbs. But when a member of Sofie's new neighborhood book club turns up dead, things get messy. She discovers that everybody has something to hide, including her own husband. Her neighbor Priscilla has been married to Gordon for fifteen years, but the love left their marriage a long time ago. Susan is Priscilla's biggest supporter until she has to choose between loyalty to her friend and telling the truth. Ashley is eager to fit in, but her youth and status as a second wife keep her on the outside. She may know more than they think she does, though. Julia seems to have it all-the perfect house, job and husband. But her untimely death has people questioning how perfect her life really was. Through this swamp of suburban secrets, Sofie must wade to find the truth behind Julia's murder and the state of her own marriage. They Did It with Love is a delightful, twisty, and twisted exploration of the things we'll do for love.

Editorial Reviews

Amy Alexander
…[a] delightfully perverse whodunit…There are red herrings galore, but Morgenroth's greatest accomplishment is the ease with which she describes a certain kind of ennui and aimlessness—and the kinds of fatal betrayals that can lurk beneath all that suburban gloss.
—The Washington Post
Kirkus Reviews
Morgenroth (Echo, 2007, etc.) takes a break from her recent young-adult novels with this amoral tale of a mystery book club that falls apart when one of its wealthy members turns up dead. After her wealthy but heartless father's death, 28-year-old Sofie happily acquiesces to her husband Dean's suggestion that they leave Manhattan for a mock Tudor in suburban Greenwich. Soon their social life revolves around the mystery book club Sofie joins. Self-centered, thoroughly unpleasant Priscilla runs the club. Other members include kind-hearted Susan, whose husband takes her for granted; Ashley, a second wife considered a bimbo by the other women; and Julia, who moved to Greenwich only months before Sofie and is counting the months until she can return to the city. One morning while walking with Priscilla, Sofie spies Julia's body hanging from a tree in her front yard. While it looks like suicide, some damning evidence surfaces connecting Julia's husband Alex to the tragedy, and he becomes the prime suspect of both the police and the book club. It seems Alex had a first wife whose death was ruled a suicide, but the detective now assigned to Julia's case has always believed Alex murdered his first wife. Meanwhile, Dean and Priscilla begin an affair that doesn't stop Priscilla from enlisting Sofie to get the goods on Alex. Alex, who believes Julia had a secret lover, comes to Sofie to learn what the club members know. Poor Sofie seems everyone's dupe. After she and Alex spend increasing time together, Sofie tells him she does not believe he is guilty. When she finds evidence that Dean was Julia's lover, an interesting confession is made. Morgenroth tricks suspicious readers by withholding keyinformation until the end.

    Who really did it?
I enjoyed reading this book, however, I was a little disappointed with the ending. It didn't clearly explain how the murder was
committed by the one that did it.

    Meaningless title; Disappointing ending

While the author developed the characters, the plot and the suspense fairly well, I was disappointed in the ending. I believe in justice for victims in fiction as well as in real life. Unless I am missing some sort of subtly, I could see no connection at all between the title and the story. In fact, I saw very little love in these pages at all.

    good light mystery

good read, but a bit predictable; enjoyed the story; great for curling
up with a cup of tea and enjoying a book.

    Not a bad novel

This was my first interaction with kate Morgenroth and her writing. She's got a fluid writing style that easy to read. I liked this book, but didn't love it. I did love the twist at the end. I would recommend it for book clubs, but only if you don't have to pay the full price!!

    Huge disappointment

It started ok. The characters were kind of blah. But the end ruined it for me. I thought it was terrible overall. It wasn't badly written, but the plot was predictable and boring.

    Good Twists

This book was so good. Just when you think you've figured it out, there is another twist. Very satisfying.

    A reviewer

Following the death of her ice cold father, twenty-something Sofie and her husband Dean move from Manhattan to affluent Greenwich, Connecticut. She joins other married females (friendly Susan, trophy wife Ashley, unhappy Julia and acrimonious ¿president¿ Priscilla) in a local mystery book club that becomes the center of her activities in the burbs. --- Sofie and Priscilla are walking when the former sees Julia hanging from a tree, an apparent suicide. GPD Detective Peters affirms the death scene looks like a suicide, but he finds it too coincidental that the first wife of the victim¿s husband Alex killed herself too that first death Peters felt was more suspicious looking than this one so he wonders if Alex improved. However, like the stars of the amateur sleuths she has recently read mostly to avoid the wrath of Pricilla, Sofie has some doubts too. The other surviving club members believe Alex killed his wife. As Dean and Priscilla begin an affair, the club president pushes Sofie to investigate while Alex turns to her also insisting his late second wife had a secret lover, who may have killed her to keep her silent. Sofie begins to turn around her opinion that he is the killer especially when she learns how social Dean has gotten with the mystery book club memberships. --- This is entertaining police procedural amateur sleuth tale starring a fully developed cast of wealthy people. The story line is character driven as readers meet up front the couples and two competing detectives (GPD and the Office of the DA) so that any of the book club members even Sofie or their spouses could be the killer as few accept suicide. Well written, fans who like to match wits with the author and the sleuths will find a coda revealing twist involving victim vs. villain needed to solve the case as crime caper fans will relish the aptly titled THEY DID IT WITH LOVE. --- Harriet Klausner

    Must Read

This was definitely one of the best novels I have ever read. The author definitely knew how to keep her readers guessing. There are so many twists and turns that you just cannot put the book down. This was the first book I have ever read from this author, but I'm definitely going to read more. Great read...constant suspense...
