Meet the Author

Gerald Graff, a Professor of English and Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and 2008 President of the Modern Language Association of America, has had a major impact on teachers through such books as Professing Literature: An Institutional History, Beyond the Culture Wars: How Teaching the Conflicts Can Revitalize American Education, and, most recently, Clueless in Academe: How Schooling Obscures the Life of the Mind.

Cathy Birkenstein is a lecturer in English at the University of Illinois at Chicago and co-director of the Writing in the Disciplines program. She has published essays on writing, most recently in College English, and, with Gerald Graff, in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Academe, and College Composition and Communication. She has also given talks and workshops with Gerald at numerous colleges and is currently working on a study of common misunderstandings surrounding academic discourse.

    HIGHLYYYY RECOMMENDED!!!!

    i needed this book for my college English class. It is super easy to understand and has helped me become a better writer already and I'm only 3 chapters in! it is a must!

    I highly recommend this book.

    I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in academic and other forms of argumentative writing. It is especially relevant for college freshman. This book is very well written and organized. In addition, the authors include an index of templates in the back for quick reference. I enjoyed the readings in the back as well. Indeed, after combining the lessons learned from this book with my previous classroom studies, I was able to analyze David Zinczenko's "Don't Blame the Eater" for the following rhetorical moves and techniques: They Say / I Say, "So What?" and "Who Cares?", Planting a Naysayer, transitions, ethos, logos, pathos, kairos, exigency, conflict, a good beginning and ending, alliteration, and great creative word choice that complement his overall theme. Yet some readers may challenge the notion of templates. They will probably argue that templates stifle creativity. However, I believe that templates provide a strong foundation for academic writing that do not stifle creativity. There are enough choices among the templates and enough blank space within each template that the writer can be very creative when presenting his or her argument. In fact, I would argue that the writer will become even more creative after mastering the rhetorical moves. In short, this book is a must-have for all students and professionals who are serious about their writing and academic career.
