Overview

Are you curious or skeptical about this phenomenon?

More than forty years ago a young reporter for Guideposts magazine set out to gather information about a strange new occurrence happening all over the country. John Sherrill, a skeptic when it came to speaking in tongues and the Baptism with the Holy Spirit, was determined to retain his objectivity while digging out the facts. What he found would change his life.

This 40th anniversary edition of the classic that inspired millions of readers worldwide is the story of one man's journey from skepticism to a life-changing relationship with God. Filled with historical and biblical accounts of speaking in tongues, the book is a deeply personal and moving story of how you, too, can walk in the power of the Spirit day by day.

"For all those who would like to know what the discussion of 'tongues' is about, here is the book to read." -Catherine Marshall

    Really cool

I had originally ordered the book online, and after I got it I realized that it didn't have the forward by Brother Andrew. Praise God for Barnes & Noble samples! I have since started the book and it is awesome. The forward by Brother Andrew makes the money worth it to me. If you like him anywhere close to the amount that I love him, the sample itself is well worth hitting the "Get Sample" and reading it.

    Highly recommend.

    A Skeptic Who Turned Believer

It is usually the impartial (or sometimes even hostile) observer who often captures and documents the most accurate account, or the impartial historian who pieces together the most objective summary of past events. John Sherrill was a religious man, and worked as a reporter for Guideposts magazine, a faith-based periodical. He was, however, NOT a Pentecostal and had no interest in being one. As he relates in this book, he felt 'distance' was the best perspective for his study of the phenomena which set Pentecostals apart from other Christian groups more than any other---speaking in tongues. I myself can relate to his experience, as I am sure can many others in this age of charismatic awakening in the traditional church bodies. Sherrill's writing is straightforward and readable, and his presentation of the history of the Pentecostal movement's beginnings, as well as the current issues of his day surrounding the movement (including the apparent expansion of Holy Spirit-filled phenomena into mainline denominations such as his own Episcopal church) is among the best I have read. He might be considered the C.S. Lewis of the Pentecostal movement. A great read, whether you are a believer or not.
