Children's LiteratureThe "Spiritual Biographies for Young Reader" series makes a point to present positive role models. This book highlights a Buddhist monk from Vietnam without preaching Buddhism to readers. Instead, the book's focus is on peaceful doings and good works completed by Thich Nhat Hahn. The text stresses how readers may be enlightened by calmly thinking about what is around them and how they may let go of anger. For grade school classrooms this is a bonus. Three of the book's "Now It's Your Turn" activities allow readers to participate in projects related to good works. One focuses on thinking about things, one encourages planting of seeds to see how much food can be grown from a package of seeds, and another asks readers to make a picture or write about or illustrate things that are wrong and could be changed. A timeline and glossary round out the text. Put this book on classroom, home, or library shelves to allow readers a good look at what a positive role model can do. 2004, Skylight Paths Publishing, Ages 7 up.
