Tales of the Scrimshaw Doll

Sometimes, secrets refuse to stay buried…

A ten-year-old accidental killing and an ancient cursed doll are only part of Julia Bennett's problems. When she returns to her hometown of Covington, Oklahoma for an old friend's funeral, she's thrust into the middle of a murder case—and discovers she never stopped loving her high school sweetheart.

Jake Devlin is now the sheriff of Covington and faced with solving a murder. He isn't surprised to find Julia in the middle of things. She still seems like the troublemaker whose reckless mistake caused a man's death years ago…and who broke his heart when she left him without so much as a goodbye.

Jake makes it clear he's over her, and Julia can't wait to leave Covington behind. But when another friend dies, she knows she must stay. Can they put the past behind them and stop a killer before he claims another victim?

Another great Alicia Dean read! Julia left Covington after she graduated high school. She’s made a good life for herself in Florida. But, when one of her friends in Covington is found dead, she goes back for the funeral. Corbin, the deceased, had married Pam (another of Julia’s high school friends). They thought Corbin had committed suicide, but the developments show he was murdered. Before Julia could go back home after Corbin’s funeral, another high school friend, Emily, is murdered. Julia, being an investigator for a law firm, wants to find out who the murderer is. Jake Devlin (Julia’s high school sweetheart) is now the town’s Sheriff. He doesn’t want Julia’s help. He tries to show her that he is over her and wants her to go back home. He keeps sending her mixed signals on that subject. They think the murderer is Donny Ray Ramsey, because her group of high school friends accidently killed his father 10 years ago. So many different things transpire. Pam had bought this antique doll and thinks the doll is causing the deaths. She says that the doll’s history shows that it’s cursed. Is Pam losing her mind, or is she right?? Sheriff Devlin does his own investigating when Julia finds out that Donny Ray might have a step sister/brother. What he actually finds out, is a big surprise. What does he do with that information?? Sorry, I can’t tell you. You have to read the book to find out. You won’t be sorry you did. This book is a great mystery/romance. Alicia Dean writes great books. She writes the story so well, that you get all wrapped up in it and read it to the end. Her characters are always portrayed so well, you think you are right there with them.

Nicely done, Ms. Dean. I’m ready for more! I’ve never had a short novel bring me to tears before Alicia Dean’s Thicker Than Water. If you enjoy a whodunit mystery within a strong, clean romance, this is a must read. The suspense was neatly woven and the mystery kept me guessing. Jake is the kind of hero who doesn’t need to be center of attention. His presence alone screams authority. Love it! Julia is a strong woman with just enough insecurities to make you jump right into her skin and live this tale of the scrimshaw doll right along with her. -R.T. Wolfe
