Overview

Even though Christian Thielemann's 2013 twofer of Wagner recordings appears at first glance to be a compilation from his own discography, the majority of tracks are actually historic analog recordings by such great conductors as Wilhelm Furtwängler, Hans Knappertsbusch, Carlos Kleiber, Herbert von Karajan, and Pierre Boulez. Because of that, this collection will be appreciated most by dedicated Wagnerians who are interested in past performances from Deutsche Grammophon's vaults and who can listen past the surface noise of the oldest recordings to hear music that is still important and exciting. In addition to the orchestral extracts are powerful vocal excerpts from the music dramas, variously sung by René Kollo, Margaret Price, Brigitte Fassbaender, Thomas Stewart, James King, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Jess Thomas, Gerhard Stolze, Helga Dernesch, and Helge Brilioth. Thielemann's recordings of the "Overture to Rienzi" and "Siegfried's Funeral March" from "Götterdämmerung" are adequate performances that take up a small part of the program, which is dominated by selections from Karajan's late-'60s recordings of "Der Ring des Nibelungen." Considering the interesting mix of conductors and the value of having so much variety on the first CD, devoting the second half of the package to Karajan is an unimaginative choice, especially considering that Thielemann's "Ring" with the Wiener Staatsoper is completely ignored. For general listeners, there are many other Wagner collections that have more of the expected greatest hits in all digital sound, so this one is not recommended for beginners.
