Reviewer: Patricia Wong, MD (Stanford University Medical Center) Description: I was pleasantly surprised to see how well written this little book is and how much knowledge has been distilled into it. It is a mini-encyclopedia — think of it as a mini-Fitzpatrick. Color photographs are included which is unusual for a paperback of this size. The text is excellent and all the information is up-to-date. This is the first edition in English; there are five previous editions in German. Purpose: It is intended as a handy, comprehensive, small reference for general dermatology. Audience: The audience is dermatologists. I would recommend dermatology residents carry this in their pocket. Features: There are many useful tables: summarizing the dermatosopic findings of melanoma and what this represents histologically, comparing the effectiveness and specific target acne lesions treated by different medications, contrasting differences in contact allergic versus irritant dermatitis. There is an interesting section on compounding in the back of the book and helpful therapeutic tips and good guidelines on diagnostic work-up of various diseases, including laboratory studies. This book is a great buy. When you can't haul Rook (Rook's Textbook of Dermatology, 7th edition, Burns et al. (Blackwell Publishing, 2004)) or Fitzpatrick (Fitzpatrick's Dermatology in General Medicine, 5th edition, Freedberg et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2003)) around with you, pop this in your pocket. It contains a wealth of information on all aspects of dermatology. Assessment: I recommend you purchase this and have it nearby. I guarantee you will use it. Wonderful for board review also!
