I am teaching myself to quilt. I had this book on my shelf and bought another one for my sister who is an avid quilter. We are using the blocks to make a quilt together. With her expertise I make my block and call her for advice if I run into a problem. It will be interesting to see the two different but similar quilts when completed. I am learning quite a lot from each block that I create. Absolutely the most useful and beautiful book you could use for quilting.
I have always enjoyed the quilts that come from a Thimbleberries book. This one is no exception. My only trouble is which one do I start with!! I am such an earth tone decorator that any of them would fit in my house but I usually don't have enough time to make the gifts I need and keep some for myself. Block by Block contains three sampler quilts (so 36 different blocks) plus ten other projects. (The cover says 50 blocks and 20 projects - I find 55 blocks and 13 projects or 15 if you count the two color options for the one quilt). Either way you count it, there are a LOT of projects and blocks. There are throws, wall hangings, pillows, a table runner, a table topper, and a mini tree skirt. Start with one of the pillows or mini tree skirt if you only have a weekend. Each project has a color photo of the finished project along with the finished size. A detailed fabric list tells you what fabrics are used for what block. Then each block (for the sampler quilts) comes next with their own cutting list and piecing directions. Plenty of graphics are provided so you can see if you are following the directions correctly. Borders and quilt assembly directions follow each individual block's information. And detailed quilting suggestions are provided. A dozen pages provided general instructions plus there is a three-page glossary of terms. With over 150 pages of patterns and instructions, this book will keep you busy for a very long time.
