Overview

Critically acclaimed for Girl Culture and Fast Forward, Lauren Greenfield continues her exploration of contemporary female culture with Thin, a groundbreaking book about eating disorders. Greenfield's photographs are paired with extensive interviews and journal entries from twenty girls and women who are suffering from various afflictions. We meet 15-year-old Brittany, who is convinced that being thin is the only way to gain acceptance among her peers; Alisa, a divorced mother of two whose hatred of her body is manifested in her relentless compulsion to purge; Shelly, who has been battling anorexia for six years and has had a feeding tube surgically implanted in her stomach; as well as many others. Alongside these personal stories are essays on the sociology and science of eating disorders by renowned researchers Joan Jacobs Brumberg, Dr. David Herzog, and Dr. Michael Strober. These intimate photographs, frank voices, and thoughtful discussions combine to make Thin not only the first book of its kind but also a portrait of profound understanding.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
With Girl Culture and Fast Forward, photographer Lauren Greenfield cast a revealing lens on the lives of American girls and young women. In Thin, she and Cornell professor Joan Jacobs Brumberg offer us rare access into the experiences of 20 female residents of a Florida eating disorder treatment facility. Greenfield's striking pictures, exclusive interviews with the women and girls, and personal journal entries combine to give reality to what might seem to be a theoretical problem. An unforgettable look at a malady that will affect one out of seven American women.

    Buy this book.

The combination of pictures and words from both medical professionals and those so deep into this horrid disease are breathtaking. You get to see what anorexia and bulimia do, not only to the body but to the spirit. This negates the common idea that anorexia occurs because of 1. the media and 2. because girls want to look like models. If this was true, why would we have girls who want to die, and who do die because of these horrible eating disorders? The HBO special follows the story of 4 people - the book follows many: anorexic, bulimic, compulsive over eaters. It focuses on the WHY, not the how (which can be used against the negative mind if given to someone who has an eating disorder or predisposition to one) and what this residential centre does to help those who are inflicted with these disorders. It gives hope to those who suffer and those who watch others suffer. Also great for the professional because it is a new way of looking at these diseases. Beautiful pictures and beautiful words. Thank you for creating this and the documentary.

    An eye opener

This book is amazing to look at and read. Vivid--sometimes brutal--photographs throughout show you what eating disorders REALLY do to the victims -- and their families. It's touching, but also very haunting. As I said, this is a definite eye-opener and brushes away alot of the popular myths of these ravaging illnesses. It will leave you speechless.
