Overview

Things I know about love.

1. People don't always tell you the truth about how they feel.
2. Nothing that happens between two people is guaranteed to be private.
3. I don't know if you ever get over having your heart broken.

Livia Stowe's past experiences with love have been nothing but disappointing, but all that is about to change.  After years of illness, she's boarding a plane for the first time to spend the summer in Princeton, New Jersey, with her brother who's studying abroad.  This Brit is determined to make the most of her American summer and to record every moment of it in her private blog.

America is everything that Livia's ever dreamed of.  And then she meets Adam.

Swept up in the promise of romance and the magical New York City that Adam shows her, Livia is smitten, but with all she knows about love, is Livia really ready to risk her heart again?

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
Livia, 17, is determined to find romance. She's fought leukemia most of her teen years and hasn't had much time for boys. Now she's flown from her native England to visit her older brother, an American Studies major at Princeton University, who is staying in the States over the summer. The expats of Princeton seem to adore her, particularly her brother's friend Adam. In her private blog, Livia chronicles her history of failed relationships and the thrill of finding what she believes to be true love with Adam. Near the end of the trip she falls ill, and upon returning to England she learns that her leukemia is back. The premises of the book, both the blogging and the romance, get off to a shaky start. Livia is a friendly, observant person, though, which makes the idea of every attractive young man in Princeton falling in love with her more palatable than one might think. And Nicholas Sparks fans will rejoice at Livia and Adam's doomed relationship. Good for a quick cry. (Fiction. 12 & up)
School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—British teen Livia is winging her way to New Jersey to visit her brother, a student at Princeton, when she begins her private blog. She has decided that this will be a summer of discovery, and her blog will reflect "the love I have known, and the love I have yet to know." The truth is, though, that Livia doesn't know much about love between men and women because she has spent most of her teen years in treatment for leukemia. Now that she's in remission, she determines that this is her perfect chance for adventure. Despite her naïveté and insecurity about her looks, she is ready to step out, and she discovers that America is chock-full of handsome guys who look at her with great interest. Ironically, it's Adam, also from England, whom Livia wants. Adam, who thinks she is the most beautiful creature on Earth, who starts his own blog about their romance, and who is with Livia day after day, and with her when she collapses in New York City after a busy day of sightseeing. And it is Adam who writes the final blog about what happens to Livia, the great love of his life. This romantic account of first love will be treasured by teen girls, but will require that large boxes of tissues be on hand.—Susan Riley, Mount Kisco Public Library, NY

Things I Know About Love by Kate le Vann Review

If you're looking for a quick and light and fun read I think you'll find this book to be a good fit. Normally opinions on books are vast and varied but the more I heard about this particular story the more I saw this book didn't fit into that mold. Everyone I've talked to or read reviews from seems to agree that this is a "cute" and very "quick" book to get through. With it's 167 pages I think it may be one of the shorter books I've read.

Livia has led a hard and somewhat sheltered life. She is currently in remission when we are introduced to her and she takes the journey from the UK to the U.S. to visit her brother at college. The book consists mainly of blog posts (which I loved) and it makes it more personable in my opinion. Readers really get the feeling that they're hearing Livia's voice throughout her postings, it doesn't feel so much like a narration. Her character was sweet and likable and I found myself pulling for her to come out on top.

Adam and Jeff (her brother) are two more characters I enjoyed in this story. Livia and Jeff have a great brother/sister relationship and its touching to read. I was envious. Adam's posts were an additional way to get to know him and I enjoyed the opportunity.

This is a very short book as I said so the ending kind of rushed up on me but at the same time was not quite shocking. Le Vann gives you laughs as well as tears and for me I thought it was a nice change to read a quick and touching story like this one. If you're not looking for a Tolstoy sized read this might be exactly what you're looking for.

    Ok

It was super short so there wasnt much plot. There wasnt much of anything. Not a lot of adam :( the way the chapters were written was really cool. I loved nicholas sparks so i liked it but i thought the book was way too short to be a love story

    everything to do with Love

I was looking for a short, fun read to have inbetween all the serious books I have been reading. Cute comedy about love? Check. 160 pages? Check. Boy, was I wrong, there is so much more depth then just a teen love story in this one. It amazes me on how you think a story is, or how it's going to go by just looking at the blurb about it and the book cover. Just opens my eyes to the whole don't judge a book by it's cover theory.

Livia Stowe has gone through so much in her life. Recently, just getting the clean bill of health with her cancer, she feels brand new. Not to the point where she can challange the world, but just enough to go overseas to the US and visit her brother in college. After some whining and pleading to her mother, she get's her chance. USA here she comes! Time to hang out with her brother, travel down the road to New York, and realize what she can about love.

USA definitely didn't fit her picture of what to expect. It was magical, bright, and had so much for Livia to experience. Especially when her brother's friend Adam starts to show interest in her. He is the older, attractive man, who knows Livia from her hometown and waits to spend time with her, no matter what the cost. After some awkward meetings together, they finally get alone and experience their own type of love with each other.

Fantasies only last for so long though. Livia starts to develop a sore throat, which a normal person who just seem to be a cold, but for a cancer survivor, it could be life or death. She doesn't want her dream to end, Adam is the one for her, she can go home to England and see him. Livia loves him, but all good things must come to an end. Things I know about Love helps you remind yourself of your first love, your last love, and the love you never forgot.
