Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This padded board book with cardboard pages aims directly at children who are reluctant to go to bed, introducing a bunny who loves bedtime. Throughout, Moroney emphasizes family rituals (“I snuggle into bed with my teddy-bunny and Dad reads me a story”) and positive thinking. Nestled under a patchwork quilt, the bunny thinks about the things that he’d “like to dream about,” as Moroney’s cozy images take a whimsical turn, showing the bunny riding on the back of a bumblebee on a trip to the moon, as well as sailing a pirate ship “on a sea of raspberry jelly” that’s crowded with goldfish. Encouraging and reassuring, this might persuade some readers to look to bedtime with anticipation instead of trepidation. Up to age 3. (Jan.)

How can parents and other caregivers help children look forward to bedtime and a wind down to a busy day? Developing a routine that is enjoyable and predictable is certainly an approach. A young bunny exclaims that he loves his bath, brushing his teeth and putting on his favorite pajamas. He and his mother play a game, and then dad joins to read a story. They talk about the "best moments" of the day and then dad tells his son how much he loves him. It is time to close one's eyes and dream while feeling secure and loved. According to the author's note, her book "shares examples of creating positive thinking about an everyday situation." Furthermore, a positive bedtime routine can lead to closer bonds between children and their caregivers. Patents and children will find the illustrations are as soothing as the text. Kirkus Reviews
A bunny exults in the joys of bedtime one yawn at a time. Both parents assist their little rabbit through the nightly ritual until their child's words turn to zzz's. Mom playfully chases her bunny into bed; Dad gets syrupy after the story: "Of all the millions and squillions of little bunnies around the world, how did I get so lucky to have the best one?" The bunny's reflections on his day's activities shift to dramatic, imaginative dreams; the youngster rides bees toward the moon and sails aboard a makeshift pirate ship on a sea made of raspberry jelly and teeming with goldfish. The padded cover encloses gentle spreads that idealize this loving family; the bunnies' fuzzy outlines keep the adorable level at an all-time high. The young narrator addresses his audience in a self-conscious, adult-sounding voice. "Remembering my best moments makes me feel good about being me!" As behavior modeling, this celebration excels; as a depiction of childhood, it leaves a little to be desired. Though very affectionate, this drift into slumber hops heavily. (Board book. 3-4)
