Overview

Bobby Phillips is an average fifteen-year-old boy. Until the morning he wakes up and can't see himself in the mirror. Not blind, not dreaming—Bobby is just plain invisible. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to Bobby's new condition; even his dad the physicist can't figure it out. For Bobby that means no school, no friends, no life. He's a missing person. Then he meets Alicia. She's blind, and Bobby can't resist talking to her, trusting her. But people are starting to wonder where Bobby is. Bobby knows that his invisibility could have dangerous consequences for his family and that time is running out. He has to find out how to be seen again—before it's too late.

When fifteen-year-old Bobby wakes up and finds himself invisible, he and his parents and his new blind friend Alicia try to find out what caused his condition and how to reverse it.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A 15-year-old boy discovers that he has turned invisible overnight and becomes determined to take control of the situation and of his own destiny. "As preposterous as the teen's predicament may be, the author spins a convincing and affecting story," according to PW. Ages 10-up. (Mar.)n Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
From The Critics
What if you woke up one morning and found you were invisible? This is the dilemma Bobby Phillips faces—being invisible changes his whole life. If he leaves the house, he either has to cover himself completely, or wear nothing at all. His parents are having a hard time explaining his extended absence from school. He has to keep his condition a secret, and this causes even more problems. When Bobby meets Alicia at the library, he believes he's found a friend who will accept him as he is. Alicia is blind, so his invisibility doesn't matter to her¾once she believes he is telling her the truth. Their growing friendship and the mystery concerning Bobby's condition make for an absorbing, imaginative tale. 2002, Philomel Books,

a book review of Things Not Seen by Havenemo

Things not Seen is an exciting book with smart, loyal, funny, and brave characters who help each other throughout the whole book. It is about the friendship of an invisible boy and a smart, bright blind girl.
Bobby Philips, and ordinary teenager, one day wakes up to find himself invisible. As he tries to figure out what had caused it and how to return back to normal, his parents are struggling to hide his secret from the government and to keep him safe. The state of Illinois is becoming more suspicious, because he doesn't go to school anymore. Then, Bobby meets a blind girl named Alicia in the library. They become good friends, and help each other through hard times, and stay loyal to one another no matter what happens. With the help of his smart father, Alicia, and her family, Bobby proves to be a brave and loyal character in the book.
I like this book because it is exciting and thrilling, and many things happen to Bobby and Alicia, but they stick together to the end. I suggest this book for all ages, because it is a very enjoyable book, especially for people who have ever dreamed of becoming invisible.

    I Also Recommend:

    Bobby: An invisible boy.

Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements is an awesome fictional novel. It is full of suspense and it will take you places never seen before. It practically reads itself. Things Not Seen is set in Chicago in the modern day time. Like most teenagers, Bobby Phillips, doesn't really like to collaborate with his parents. Then, Bobby woke up one morning and discovered that he was invisible! Now he must tell his parents but he doesn't know how. When Bobby wakes up to being invisible, he tells his parents by using his clothes to show them that he is there. Next, Bobby's parents are in a horrible car accident which put them both in the hospital. Meanwhile Bobby is home alone, scared. Bobby decided to leave the house and go the library to do some research on what happen to him. There he finds a friend Alicia, a little blind girl, who is going to help him figure out how to make him visible again, and what caused him to become invisible. They must do something before Bobby's parents are arrested for making him disappear. Andrew Clements is an intelligent author. He made it feel like you were in the story, the way the characters talked, thought and interacted. Also the word choice that Clements used, he used advanced but understandable words. Kids with an imagination and who like fun books should read Andrew Clements books. It was full of suspense. For example: Will Bobby stay invisible? How did he become invisible? Will his parents get arrested? Things Not Seen also comes in a series, there is Things Hoped For, Things That Are, and many more. It was a great book.
