Overview

No matter what type of content you create-feature film, shorts, webisodes, transmedia, YouTube-this book is for you.

Unlike any other book on the subject, Think Outside the Box Office is the first to address the new distribution and marketing landscape facing filmmakers today. Throughout the book, award winning filmmaker and film professor Jon Reiss redefines film rights from a filmmaker's point of view empowering the reader to create unique strategies for their individual films.

Reiss has created a break through step-by-step guide to distributing and marketing a film from a nuts-and-bolts perspective. Each chapter addresses an essential aspect of a film's release and offers specific techniques so filmmakers can take control of their distribution and marketing destiny.

    Must Have For Indie Filmmakers!

If you are an indie filmmaker, you need this book. Feature film distribution has changed so drastically, the old models for marketing and promoting your product are nearly, if not completely, obsolete.

I just finished production on my second feature. Pre-production began about eight months ago, but promotion began a year ago. Using this book helped me see what I did wrong (and right) for my first feature and so greatly improved our strategies this second time around. And we're only just entering post-production!

Our prep changed, our production changed; we raised five times the money we had - we re-negotiated better terms on distribution for our first flick -- the list goes on and on. Not everything here will work for YOU, but will get your brain moving in the right direction.

Your movie is only, maybe, half your product. Remember that.

A Definite Must for Indie Filmmakers

I've been pouring over Jon Reiss's book Think Outside The Box Office. As an indie film producer, I find Jon's book to be extremely relevant for marketing and distributing a film in this newly emerging digital era. It's by the far the best all-in-one resource I've found to help me write smart business, marketing and distribution plans. I highly recommend anyone in indie filmmaking to check it out. You'll know why once you see it.

This is the future of movies

Jon Reiss's excellent book is a field guide to the brave new world of DIY film distribution. I teach at a film school, and when I hear people talking about pitching their scripts to Hollywood studios, or going to Sundance looking for a distribution deal, I refer them to this book. If you can't make it to one of Jon's high-energy workshops (and even if you can), Think Outside the Box Office is required reading. Anyone trying to build an audience for an independent film needs this book. I can't praise it enough.

Think Outside the Box Office is your map to the future!

"Think Outside the Box Office" is an ESSENTIAL book for any filmmaker learning about self distribution. To be honest the book is a little overwhelming and I will probably have to read it twice to truly absorb the wealth of info Jon Reiss has to offer. I look forward to implementing some of these ideas on my next film -- especially the importance and benefits of building your core audience during the writing/pre-production phase.
Jon Reiss has a vision for the future....and the future is now.

If you are an indie filmmaker you need to read this

As someone who works as film distribution and audience engagement consultant, I highly recommend Jon's book: the most complete, clear and helpful guide to DIY and hybrid distribution I've ever read.
Making a film without a distribution and promotional plan nowadays is plainly naive. Thanks to Jon's book, however, even first time filmmakers can rely on a solid guidance to help them decide what moves to make when they embark into and during the filmmaking process.
A truly revolutionary tool in its DIY approach and in its revelation of some of the best kept secrets of film distribution.

    - Read This Book -

This book is a blessing! Although written from US and documentary perspective, the know-how contained can easily be adapted for Europe (plus other territories surely too) as well as for features, animation and shorts.

    A must read

Over the last year we have released our first feature documentary "Beyond Biba" and TOTBO has been a great tool in getting the film out there. It's written by someone who has actually released their film and this comes screaming off each page. If you are considering releasing your film in a DIY hybrid fashion this is a must read book.

    Tons of Great Information

I resisted buying Jon Reiss' "Think Outside The Box Office" for a while because I've already read so much about the subject of indie film distribution. But when I finally got to look through the book in a store I was hooked.

Here was a step by step outline of an actual self-distribution experience (Reiss self-distributed his doc "Bomb it!") which contains all the gory details. It reveals the budgets, references to various service providers, and actual case studies from others who had done some version of their own self-distribution.

Reiss also brings some new perspectives into the game as he addresses the rapidly shifting (rotting) state of indie distribution. I have to warn you that this is a dense book, but I like that. It's packed with useful info and ideas for every filmmaker from a filmmaker who has been there himself and lived to tell about it.

    Great Map for Filmmakers

This is one of the best, most current books I've read on DIY film marketing and distribution. Not only is it an incredible resource for DIYers, it is peppered with some of the most cutting edge films and filmmakers working today. I could not put the book down. If you read this book, be ready to be inspired.
