Overview

In the last five years, there have been exciting new scientific discoveries about the brain, its function, and its performance. In this fascinating, fun-to-read book, brain expert Dr. Richard Restak has asked his colleagues-among them the world's leading brain scientists and researchers-an important question: What can I do to help my brain work more efficiently? Their surprising and feasible answers are at the heart of Think Smart. In his characteristically accessible style, Restak explains the latest scientific discoveries about our brain and gives us insight into how we can keep our most powerful organ in top condition. You'll learn:

How walking a mile a day can shape your brain

That increased hand and finger dexterity increases both mental agility and longevity

How to multitask without losing your powers of concentration and focus

The positive impact video games can have on your brain

The benefits to your brain of learning three new words every day

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
As readers of Mozart's Brain and The Fighter Pilot know, Richard Restak's books combine the findings of cutting-edge neuroscientific research and very practical advice. Thus, his Think Smart will not only make you a more interesting dinner companion, it will also enhance your learning ability, memory, and brain health. A fitness guide for the body's most powerful organ.
Library Journal
Neuroscientist and New York Times best-selling author Restak (Mozart's Brain and the Fighter Pilot) presents an accessible analysis of how the human brain works and shares suggestions for improving its function—namely, through the restorative powers of sleep. Drawing on his own clinical research as well as on findings from numerous other sources (which he does not directly cite), Restak translates the highly complex scientific data forming the basis of this material into relevant language that will intrigue both erudite and lay listeners. Arthur Morey's (The Evolution of God) clear, steadily paced narration adds value to this substantial work, which nicely updates Daniel G. Amen's Making a Good Brain Great. [The Riverhead: Penguin hc was "highly recommended for public libraries," LJ 4/15/09.—Ed.]—Dale Farris, Groves, TX

Informative guide to improving brain health and performance

Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary defines the brain as "the portion of the vertebrate central nervous system enclosed in the skull and continuous with the spinal cord through the foramen magnum that is composed of neurons and supporting and nutritive structures (as glia) and that integrates sensory information from inside and outside the body in controlling autonomic function (as heartbeat and respiration), in coordinating and directing correlated motor responses, and in the process of learning." Phew! Luckily, neurology professor Richard Restak is here to synthesize contemporary research about the brain into applicable, accessible information. He doles out pertinent advice about how to look after your brain, including what to eat, how much to eat and what not to eat. He also explains how sleeping can maximize your creativity and brain health. Restak manages to make many of these suggestions for healthy living sound intriguing, even fun. getAbstract recommends this light scientific guide to readers who want to enhance their creativity and improve their brain's performance.

    Practical and Fascinating

After a slow start, this book kicked into high gear, offering tons of practical and detailed advice on boosting your own intelligence. Highly recommended. Beyond the usual "better nutrition, exercise, sleep" mantra found in other writing, Restak solicits from fellow neuroscientists a wide range of mental exercises one can perform to boost attention, memory, and general mental performance.
