Want a NOOK? Explore Now
Since diets don't work, and so many people have unhealthy relationships with food, the key to weight loss is not what you put in your mouth-it's what goes on in your mind.
Brain-imaging technology has shown that thought patterns driven by willpower can actually change the structure of the brain. Using this scientific basis for her program, Dr. Darcy Buehler has helped hundreds of people lose weight and keep it off. In Think Yourself Thin, Dr. Buehler shows readers how to:
- Get the right ideas into your mind, so that your will to lose weight works unwanted urges out of the brain's circuitry
- Determine the approaches that are effective at slimming you down individually, while helping you grow as a person on the inside
The book includes a 72-minute self-hypnosis audio CD with eight tracks that complement the program in the book.
Chapter one Hypnosis and Self-Hypnosis for Weight Loss: Rewiring Your Brain
Most weight-loss strategies involve dieting, in which your will is directed toward staying away from certain foods for a certain amount of time, but not about eliminating unhealthy urges altogether.
Using this CD, your will is directed toward addressing your most internal thoughts, urges, and finally, that area of your brain that generates the unhealthy cravings. With this approach you will be replacing the cravings with healthier thoughts and images and as a result will change your brain.
Your new brain circuitry will support and sometimes even initiate new urges fundamental to your new lifestyle. As you repeatedly listen to the CD and internalize the messages and make them your own, the guidance then is not from my voice, but rather deep in your own mind and the heart of direct experience.
The messages are also designed as a means of turning toward oneself with care and well-being. If you are an overweight person, this kind of care and nurturing from yourself is a rare experience. The negative messages that you repeatedly give yourself block the much-needed inner-directed care. Messages of fear, doubt, shame, and judgment are replaced with images of confidence and psychological strength.

I had hoped this book would be better. Unfortunately the book lacks inspiration and the author's voice on the CD's is painfully hard to listen to. I couldn't relax listening to her. It's too bad because the basic premise of the book is excellent and she makes some good points. Thanks to some other excellent books on the subject, I've been able to change my life. By accessing the subconscious, my weight loss struggle finally went beyond dieting, which was the key for me. Just consider what drives your eating habits, that's the place to start. Most people are so focused on working from the outside in, rather than the inside out, they are never able to build a real foundation for permanent lifestyle change. I'm over the 'lose weight fast' diets and bogus pills, I'm getting thinner and healthier by changing the way I think about myself and food.
