Overview

George Pattison argues that the radical theologians of the twentieth century were correct in seeing that traditional ways of conceiving and talking about God have been profoundly shaken by the experience of modernity and the accumulative weight of modern critiques of religion. However, these theologians typically limited their arguments to the plane of the history of ideas, and this contributed to the 'negative' tone that many readers experience in their work. An analysis of the crisis in thinking about God that also reflects on the essentially technological character of contemporary thought deepens the problem, but also helps to open the way to start once more 'thinking about God' (rather than merely working out how to 'take our leave' of theism). In preparing the way for such thinking, the reflections on technology found in the later writings of Martin Heidegger are, Pattison argues, especially fruitful.
