Overview

Whenever you want to catch up on the state of the art in modern reggae, it's best to find out what drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare are up to. As players, they've served as the rhythmic backbone for a disproportionate number of the most important reggae singles and albums, some dating back to the music's earliest days; as producers, they've shaped the sound of some of reggae's most respected singers and bands. For this soundtrack album, the boys have gathered together an impressive roster of current dancehall dons, including the ubiquitous Beenie Man, Mega Banton, and Red Dragon, as well as the excellent cultural singer Luciano (who turns in an impressive performance of "Police and Thieves," a song long considered to be owned by Junior Murvin). Lady G delivers the rock-solid and rhythmically minimalist "Man a Bad Man," Innocent Crew shows up with two weird and gangsterish numbers ("Papers" and "Mambo Jambo"), and Sly & Robbie themselves contribute several fine instrumental tracks. Very nice.
