Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This appealingly designed book has short spiritual reflections for each day of the year... This is not a touchy-feely volume of New Age affirmations, but a no-nonsense collection of entries that recommend humility, acquiescence to the will of God, service to those in need, and seeing Jesus in the poorest of the poor.

—William L. Keogan, Catholic Library World

"These 365 short daily reflections are an ideal way to take a break from life's busyness and stir up a desire for holiness... How to find and love Jesus—whether in the silence of prayer or in the faces of those we meet—is the recurring theme of Mother Theresa's words."

Catholic Digest

"This collection of daily readings offers the wisdom and example of Mother Teresa, who lived in challenging circumstances yet humbly surrendered to God. Each entry opens the reader to 'little practices of love' she recognized as opportunities for building a faithful life of service....We can do no better than to let all these words quench our thirst and guide our journey throughout the entire year."

Yearlong spiritual diary In the prologue to "Thirsting for

    Yearlong spiritual diary
In the prologue to "Thirsting for God," Editor Angelo D. Scolozzi writes of his relationship with Mother Teresa, which began in Calcutta in 1976. "By her words and example during my twenty-one years of association with her, she showed me the royal way of the cross...encouraged me to do heroic acts of total surrender, loving trust, and acceptance." Scolozzi describes this book as a kind of yearlong spiritual diary, made up of reflections, meditations, prayers, and his personal recollections of Mother Teresa. The material is drawn from numerous sources including a manuscript the senior sisters of her congregation developed incorporating Mother Teresa's first teachings. Scolozzi ponders the reaction to today's readers as her spiritual reality unfolds before them.

For a taste of this work, let's look at a series of five consecutive entries filling two pages. (1) "Be faithful to little things, for in them lies our strength." Teresa saw opportunities for "little practices of love" as gifts from God on which we may build lives of holiness. (2) Practicing small, daily acts of penance draws us to God and God to us, and earns us the grace to overcome our faults. (3) Allowing Jesus to pray in and through us enables us to act out of love for others. (4) Praying and living the "Our Father" teaches holiness: "Everything is there: God, myself, my neighbor." (5) In the name of Jesus we pray for grace to love God above all and to make our hearts meek and humble like the heart of Jesus.
