Overview

In October of 1962, U.S. jetfighters took off from bases in Florida and headed south on airborne alert. Should Cuba decide to react militarily, they were prepared to respond with force. After John Fitzgerald Kennedy's fateful 17-minute address, the entire country was about to become involved in the most dangerous event the world had ever experienced.

From October 15-28, the world teetered on the brink of nuclear war. Thirteen Days/Ninety Miles recreates the events of that time and examines the personalities of the major characters, especially John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev. Using recently declassified information, Norman Finkelstein traces the missile crisis from its origins down to a breathtaking finale.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
In this recounting of the events leading up to the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, and the subsequent blockade of Cuba, Finkelstein examines the personalities of the major characters and all that went on behind closed doors. Excellent information about the relations between the U. S. and the Soviet Union will open the eyes of young adult readers interested in 20th century history.
School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-Using information recently declassified by the U.S. government, Finkelstein effectively recounts events that led to the 1962 crisis, as well as the tense and confusing behind-the-scenes meetings that took place during it. He shows that President Kennedy initially believed that an air strike against Cuba was inevitable, but that it became increasingly clear that such action might not succeed in destroying all the missiles. The author demonstrates that, as the crisis deepened, the president became more frightened that any military confrontation could lead to a devastating nuclear war, and that-even while he communicated his ``final'' offer to Khrushchev guaranteeing that the U.S. would not attack Cuba if the Soviets dismantled their offensive nuclear weaponry there-he was planning alternative deals. Richly detailed, well documented, and well written, this book dramatically sketches a crucial slice of 20th-century history.-Jack Forman, Mesa College Library, San Diego
