Winnie Perry is fourteen now, and the countdown to high school is shaping up to be as eventful as an entire year of middle school. Not only are things shaky with her boyfriend, Lars, but BFFs Dinah and Cinnamon have been acting weird, big sister Sandra is college-bound, little brother Ty has smuggled a stolen penguin home in his backpack, and new baby sister Maggie has everything turned upside down.

It's a lot for anyone to handle, and loyal Winnie is so busy worrying about everyone else that she hardly notices that she might just be struggling a little bit herself.

With humor and honesty, Lauren Myracle brings us another pitch-perfect novel featuring the characters that her legions of fans have grown up loving.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
Here it is: the fourth book in "The Winnie Years" series! We find the hero of Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen back for another year of adolescent adventure. Winnie Perry has reached the age of fourteen, and she is primed for high school. She is nervous and unsettled about it—and eager! She has decided that this summer will be about completing all the tasks on her To-Do-Before-High-School list, like making a prediction, helping the world, and so on; just so long as they do not get in the way of time with BFFs Dinah and Cinnamon or her relationship with boyfriend Lars, these goals are golden. This year's readers are likely to enjoy the girls' realistic issues (e.g., disappointment with a boyfriend's gift, anger over a break-up, preoccupation with boys, developing sense of self-esteem, dealing with parents, anticipating a sibling's leaving for college) and unusual adventures (e.g., returning a penguin to the zoo, protecting sea turtle eggs). Future readers may find the book's contemporary slang and references to fashion and technology to be dated. For now, add it to the library collection alongside Judy Blume—and just try to keep it on the shelves long enough to collect any dust. This is sure to be a hit with today's middle-school girls. Gr 5–8—At the end of eighth grade, Winnie has a lot going on in her life. She is both excited and apprehensive about starting high school and she realizes how little time she and her sister have together before Sandra leaves for college. Her birthday is all but forgotten by everyone, including her parents, and to top it off, her boyfriend gives her a crummy present. When Lars announces he's going to Germany for the summer, Winnie and her two friends sign up for an eco-camp at a beach in South Carolina. There the girls discover that they have different talents and make some new friends, including some new boyfriends, and Winnie must deal with an unhappy Lars who didn't go to Germany after all. The characters have authentic voices, and the girls mature in each of the books in this series that began with Eleven (2004) and continued in Twelve (2007) and Thirteen (2008, all Dutton). The girls are now typical teens who are trying desperately to figure out who they really are and to be independent while still needing their parents. They are great friends, but also hurt one another without meaning to. They are, no surprise, completely preoccupied with boys. There are references to current fashions, technology, slang, etc., that will date the book, but it is a great choice for middle school girls.—Nancy P. Thirteen Plus One is the funniest of all the Winnie Years Series so far. There is a lot of changes to the characters, but nothing that changes drasticly, and we understand Winnie's feelings much better. Baby Mags is here, so Winnie, Ty, and Sandra show their nurturing sides, and everyone is growing up. Dinah finnaly starts growing up (a little) and Cinnamon shows her feelings for males (horrible). I don't want to give away the story, but this book is full of laugh-until-your-sides-hurt funniness, sea-turtles, fork-buns, black widows, shoplifting, penguins, cupcakes, hot guys who try to make girls cheat on their boyfriends, and friendship. READ ON!!!!!!!

I really enjoyed the Winnie years series... but i didn't love this book as much as the others. For one thing, the other books had a chapter representing each month, which i thought was very clever and helped me visualize the setting and date better. Also, the whole penguin thing was a chip off of writer's block. The thing about Dinah stealing... that was just not Dinah. I really wanted to be able to see Winnie go into high school and have it end the way it did. I feel that this book was to exaggerated. Sandra was not that nice to Winnie in the other books. Dinah was never a bad girl. Winnie and Lars were never that deeply in love. Your probably thinking... should i read this? Well, I'd say give it a try! You may enjoy more than i did.

I did like the whole series before, but I kind of feel like the books give an unrealistic expectation for real life.

Four days after her baby sister Magnolia Grace Perry was born, Winnie turned "thirteen plus one". And you know what that the fall, say hello to Winnie Perry the High School Freshman! But not only that is the change: her older sister Sandra is leaving the sunny Peach State for--brr--the Green Mountain State. Ambitious, Winnie makes a list of 'things to do before high school'. Can she achieve it all? Or has she bitten off more than she can chew? Written by Lauren Myracle (Eleven, Ttyl) Published 2010 by Puffin Books
