An obvious suspect for the police and an easy target for the killers, Hannay goes on the run in his native Scotland, where he must use all his wits to stay one step ahead of the game – and warn the government before it is too late. One of the most popular adventure stories ever written, The Thirty-Nine Steps established John Buchan as the original thriller writer and inspired many other novelists and filmmakers including Alfred Hitchcock.

Library Journal

Another hot new series from Penguin, "Great Books for Boys" offers a handful of top adventure stories from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Each volume sports a nice vintage-looking cover to complete the spell. Great fun (and girls can read them, too!).

    I Also Recommend:

Read this for Classic Literature's sake

This was a pretty short read (10 chapters) and I got through it pretty quickly. It was easy reading. I had seen the Alfred Hitchcock's version of the movie before I read it, so I went into it thinking there was a going to be a romance. WRONG! It wasn't anything like the movie (actually, I should say the movie wasn't anything like the book). I might have been improved by including a romance, but that's just from a woman's point of view (ha, ha!). Anyway, my overall impression of the book was that I didn't like it quite as well as I thought I was going to. You could really tell it was a dime novel. I didn't understand the complicated international secret and Scudder's code, mostly because the author lightly scimmed over that part (and that's the main part, right?). I kind of got bored with Hannay running around chapter after chapter. But the last three chapters redeem the rest of the book, I think. That was when I began to get interested and it grew more exciting. It's too bad Alfred Hitchcock didn't borrow a little more than the title and the main character's name and nothing else from the plot. Would I recommend another person to read it? Since it's a short read, I'd say go right ahead... just leave all expectations behind you.

    The 39 Steps

I consider myself a very discerning fan of thrillers and mysteries, and for good reason. These genres are easily some of the most populated ones in literature today. As a result I have very high standards for these books based off of not only its writer's style, but the sheer uniqueness of the plot and characters. Overall, The Thirty-Nine Steps was a disappointment. I understand that it is a classic written nearly 90 years ago, but that is perhaps where it should stay...in the past.
For its time, the plot would have been considered original, so I will refrain from judging the book by that element. I think what really turned me away from the book was the near in-human abilities of the bad guys of the story to always be on his tail. Hannay could have been lost in a forest and yet they would always be there chasing him. Also, the book just doesn't ever make the reader care about the characters or even feel the sense of thrill or intrigue. Pros: Classic story, short read and fluid language use. Cons: Dry, hardly thrilling at all and almost ridiculously predictable at points.

    Great Story

39 Steps is a great book! I read it for my Composition class and quickly got intriqued by it. Full of adventure with some comical events. Kept you involved throughout the book. I would recomend this book to anyone that likes detective stories and adventure.
