Barnes & Noble - William Pearl
While it seems that every pop music figure over 40 is cutting a standards recording these days, Steve Tyrell was actually ahead of the trend. His 1999 album, A New Standard, announced the arrival of an enthusiastic new singer with a genuine affection for great old songs. The fact that Tyrell had been a behind-the-scenes figure as a producer rather than a performer didn’t seriously affect his vocal talents. As he quickly proved over the course of two more successful albums -- Standard Time and This Time of Year -- Tyrell could indeed interpret standards with a great deal of heart and a raspy charm that has consistently won over fans.
This Guy's in Love continues the winning formula. Swinging lightly and aided by the first-rate support of seasoned jazz musicians including the legendary brassman Clark Terry and saxophonist Michael Brecker, Tyrell enlivens sterling tunes from the Great American Songbook, plus “This Guy’s in Love with You,” a winner from the pen of Tyrell’s old friend Burt Bacharach, who also makes a guest appearance here. From his decades in the business, Tyrell knows enough to not mess with a good thing, and This Guy's in Love is a good thing his growing audience will want.
All Music Guide - Aaron Latham
When Steve Tyrell's version of "The Way You Look Tonight" found its way onto the soundtrack for 1991's Father of the Bride, chances are he had no idea that it would eventually lead to a second career incarnation as a pop/jazz vocalist. After years of working in the shadows as a songwriter and producer, Tyrell suddenly found himself in the limelight with two successful albums of standards that were Top Ten hits on the jazz charts. His timing couldn't be better, as artists like Diana Krall sparked a renewed interest in pop standards and Tyrell's husky voice was a unique alternative to his smoother male counterparts. His fourth disc, This Guy's in Love, continues Tyrell's foray into pop standards and remains quite close to the winning formula he developed on his previous albums as he dusts off old gems like "Isn't It Romantic?" and enlists the instrumental help of famous friends like Clark Terry and Michael Brecker. The results are always pleasant, if not revelatory, as Tyrell's Dr. John-ish voice is what distinguishes these recordings from other similar standards discs. A minor addition to this set is the inclusion of two modern pop songs by his former Scepter coworkers, Burt Bacharach and Hal David. "This Guy's in Love With You" and "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" fit comfortably amid the tunes of yesteryear, with Bacharach lending a hand as pianist, arranger, and co-producer. All the songs on This Guy's in Love are impeccably performed and lovely to listen to, yet never really embed themselves into a listener's ear. The arrangements rarely offer any new insights into these oft-covered songs, as Tyrell's voice remains the single defining factor, and after recording two similar collections, even that highlight has started to lose its allure. As with his songs for the Father of the Bride films, Tyrell's simplistic interpretations provide a nice romantic soundtrack that successfully hovers above the delicate line separating quality musicianship from lounge Muzak. With his experience, songwriting abilities, and vocal chops, Steve Tyrell has the ability to take a few risks in his newfound career and soar even further away from that ghastly border.

    Where has this buy been?

After reading his bio, I answered by own question, but he has hidden his singing talent long enough!! I cannot get enough of him. I love this guy too!! He adds such a fresh, romantic feel to these great tunes! I have bought everything I could find by him and love all of them. I thought I had heard these standards done by the best, but Steve Tyrell is the man! Waiting for new CD's. I think he could sing anything, not just old standards.

We're in love with this guy

A perfect blend of Steve's husky and buttery voice, great musicians performing creative arrangements of classic love songs written by musical poets. You can hear how much Steve enjoys singing them. Great for relaxing or dancing. You never heard a better arrangement of “Georgia on My Mind.” The violin touch is a kick. These have to be some of the best musicians on the planet. If you appreciate the standards, this is a gem. If you love Sinatra and Bennett, you gotta love Tyrell.

    Makes Me Want To Swoon!

Steve Tyrell's music spans time! This is another terrific CD from him. His voice is so easy to listen to and he clearly is enjoying what he's doing. This would be a great gift for any age music lover. Although the entire CD is something not to be missed, my favorite tracks are Manhatten and That's All. Nobody, and I mean nobody, can sing these great songs like Steve Tyrell!

Steve Tyrell spins another home run of "standards"

Steve Tyrell has again gone to the well of old standards, and come away with another "gusher." Interestingly enough, I bought this CD within a week of picking up Rod Stewart's second offering of a similar nature. While Stewart's is more heavily mixed and augmented orchestrally, Steve Tyrell's gritty, soulful renderings are much sparser, yet so much more stirring. "Georgia on My Mind" may be his finest single to date. What makes this even more haunting is the fact that a day after this album of love songs was released, Tyrells wife passed away after a long bout with cancer. How ironic. I've had this album for a couple of weeks, and I can't begin to tell you how many plays it has received in my car. This is your single "must buy" for the Holiday Season. It won't get any better than this play with a hot beverage in front of the fire with your honey.

All four albums are great. I never get tired of listening to the CD's.

The great standard songs are sung in a great "new" style. It's like hearing the songs for the first time. A great listening pleasure.

    SUCH LISTENING PLEASURE

Steve is the best! I've heard his music a couple of times in the past, but there was no name to the singer. Finally I stumbled on an album of his. He does great things with wonderful old standards. A genuine listening pleasure!

    NEW LIFE

Steve Tyrell brings some new life to some already great tunes. He is unique in his phrasing and his smooth delivery reminds us of Mel Torme on steroids. Steve is simply the best we have today. When it comes to standards, there is Diana Krall and Steve Tyrell. No one else even comes close. Ron Johnson Philadelphia

    Steve Sets the Standards

I was checking out of your store the other evening, and noticed the Rod Stewart CD of standards next to the register. I thought, Steve Tyrell is so superior in that genre. He should be in this kiosk. I love Rod, but he can't hold a candle to Steve's style, timing, feeling or voice. I know it's about name recognition to you. But, believe me, Steve's CD is a gold mine. He is the music. He gives it life and melts our hearts. He is a wonderfully romantic holiday gift. Thanks.
