Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-- Beginning with a site plan, which some children may interpret as the architect's only rendering, Bare gives readers an oversimplified and erroneous look at house construction. Although the full-color photographs include a mix of clearly reproduced overviews and closeup shots, the text provides incorrect or incomplete information. Additionally, the author tries too hard to be cute with her commentary, and her phrasing is often awkward. The exact number of nails, doors, footings, panels, and other materials used in this house are given, but could lead youngsters to assume that all houses have the same quantities. A list of ``house words'' is appended. Pass on this and instead purchase Gibbons's How a House Is Built (Holiday) or Flint's Let's Build a House (Ideals, both 1990), both of which will better serve young readers. --Jeanette Larson, Texas State Library, Austin
