Publishers Weekly
Fans of the TV star will welcome the first four books in the This Is Daniel Cook series of paper-over-board books: This Is Daniel Cook at the Farm; This Is Daniel Cook at the Fire Station; This Is Daniel Cook on a Hike and This Is Daniel Cook on a Plane. With full-color stills from the television program, the books offer information on each of the four subjects, often with asides from the young, inquisitive hero, and close with a related activity. Children's Literature - Ginjer L. Clarke
This nonfiction book is a companion to the popular Canadian-produced children's TV program "This is Daniel Cook," which airs on Playhouse Disney. Daniel takes readers on a hike and introduces them to hiking equipment, wildlife spotting, plant and tree identification, safety precautions, and more, while retaining some of his spunk, curiosity, and precociousness. Lots of photo illustrations, detailed text explaining the topic, and Daniel's questions (distinguished from text by a handwriting font and arrows) keep things lively. The small square size will make it easy for younger kids to hold on their own, and size and weight comparisons that a child can relate to are helpful. An activity tells kids how to make their own homemade granola, which will require some adult supervision. This would be a terrific read to accompany a summer nature camp or for a home schooling or family hiking expedition. Additional discussion about seasonal changes and the different types of plant seeds could be helpful in early science curricula.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-Young readers will feel the excitement that Cook's TV show generates as each title opens with the phrase, "This is Daniel Cook," along with an introduction about the things that he likes to do. With hands raised, clad in his orange T-shirt, he takes readers on four typical outings. Chock-full of fun facts and amusing, colorful photographs, each book has an activity at the end. These titles are great preparations for field trips, making them excellent for school libraries.-Tracy Bell, Eastway Elementary School, Durham, NC Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
