Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Wendy Pollock-Gilson
Introduce young children to the moves of figure skating including spins, serpentines, jumps, and flips. This simple hardback picture book is illustrated with humorous drawings of each move and ends with a girl dreaming of skating in the Olympics. Beginning skaters and their parents will appreciate the clear figure skating definitions and illustrations.
School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-This informational picture book presents beginning terminology and conveys the excitement and challenges of this popular sport. Zany colored-ink drawings are full of motion, first depicting parts of the skate, then an individual in action on the ice, and then a double-page spread of a rink full of skaters of all descriptions and styles. Various patterns are shown, such as circles, lines, figure eights, and serpentines. The movements of a loop and a double lutz are shown by a series of blue shadow figures; there is also a failed jump, acknowledging the reality of falls. At the end of the day, a tired but happy skater can't get the invigorating feeling of cold and motion out of her head: she dreams of skating, and skating, and being the best. A simple book that captures the grace, difficulty, and joys of this athletic endeavor.-Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME
