Overview

This Is Not a Book will stretch your mind, put your neurons through their paces, and challenge the foundations of your opinions and knowledge itself. You’ll discover that you can’t even trust your own senses—even though they may be all you have.

Filled with philosophical puzzles that have intrigued the greatest minds, quizzes that reveal the inconsistency of our ideas, insoluble logical paradoxes, and moral dilemmas that force us to confront the consequences of our beliefs, This Is Not a Book will give your intellect a workout that you’ll thoroughly enjoy.

This Is Not a Book is divided into four sections corresponding to the major branches of philosophy. Each section includes an overview of the subject and profiles the philosophers whose work has influenced thinking in that area. Throughout the book, the tools of philosophy are applied to everyday situations—but the everyday will never seem commonplace again.

Trained in mathematical logic and analytic philosophy, Michael Picard’s interests include perception, language, social psychology, history of psychology, and cross-cultural issues. He also moderates Cafe Philosophy, weekly community-based participatory philosophy dialogues that have continued in Victoria, Canada, for over seven years.

    A reviewer

This book is a poorly written, shallow, and misleading survey of philosophy. Ironically, the title of this tome describes it faithfully. It's not substantial enough to be called a book at all. In addition, the book is very poorly designed. Someone needs to tell the designer that black type is hard to read on dark colored paper. The Queen of the Sciences deserves to have more thorough and thoughtful treatment.

    Good content, terrible design...

Thought provoking and a good introduction to history's most famous philosophers. There is only one problem with this book, but it's a big one: it's printed on dark, earth tone pages. I don't understand how anyone could have thought this was a good idea. I can only read a few pages at a time before my eyes get worn out. It's really a shame, because the content is terrific.

The book is a comprehensive survey of philosophy.

The cover said "Philosophical Games and Thought Experiments to Give Your Mind a Workout." I'm up to page 26 and the questions remind me of the end-of-chapter questions in textbooks; not very engaging. The book is 150 pages long, excluding the index. It is a good summary of philosophy starting with epistemology, and going on through ethics and morality, metaphysics and spirtuality, and into logic and infinity. I was expecting a more lighthearted Philosophy-for-dummies book and it is not that.

    What an AMAZING book!

This book broadens your mind with fun, quick and witty games. If you like to think and have fun at the same time, you should defiantly read this book. I highly recommend it.

"deliciously challenging" "this effort is to be encouraged"

Review of first edition by Allen & Unwin, quoted from Sunday Age,
Sunday 21/10/2007,
Page: 33 Section: Supplements.
Region: Melbourne Circulation: 225,000 Type: Capital City Daily.

THIS IS NOT A BOOK, by
Michael Picard.
Yes it is, a surprisingly cheap hardback. It also has the novelty of being printed on recycled paper, in colours from green to brown. In it, Michael Picard does philosophy for the "wondering masses". As he notes, philosophy has never been solely for the elite, and everyone muses at some point about the meaning of existence. The un-book begins with epistemology, and ends with Georg Cantor. In between, Picard explores everything from Buddha to Einstein. The whole is conceived in bite-sized sections, easily digestible. Each ends with a logic or deductive game, to provide amusement with the education. The result is rather more interactive than a "Philosophy for Dummies". In an era when everyone from government down seems hell-bent on encouraging stupidity, this effort is to be encouraged. Drawback: text is less legible on coloured paper. <<n.b.: corrected for second printing in 2008.

Review of first edition by Allen & Unwin, quoted from Sunday Telegraph
Sunday 21/10/2007
Page: 103 Section: Insider
Region: Sydney Circulation: 671,500 Type: Capital City Daily
By Lucy Clark

THIS IS NOT A BOOK
Dr Michael Picard
Dr Picard maintains that the average person with a house, a job and a car still wonders what the hell it all means sometimes", which is his way of saying that philosophy isn¿t just for scholarly minds.
He therefore takes a good, thorough (and accessible) look at philosophical thinking and ;0 exercises the reader's mind with a range quizzes and tests that get you scratching ur head and looking for solutions.
Picard doesn't just ponder life's imponderables, he teaches the reader how to take a logical approach to problems big and small.
