Editorial Reviews

Julie Just
…it will…prove irresistible to all Halloween-besotted children.
—The New York Times
Children's Literature - Ken Marantz
A board book is not just for the very young. The title alone, This Is NOT a Pumpkin, has provocative, surreal overtones. Double page after double page states that simply and shows what it is: round, big, having a stem. But still, it is not a pumpkin. And although you may turn it, even throw it, "no matter HOW you look at it," it is still not. If we have not guessed why yet, the next double pages reveal a picture of what it is. For pumpkins do not smile or frown. But "jack-o-lanterns do." Of course! Clear, naturalistic, almost surreal paintings of an orange pumpkin are offered in sequence to demonstrate the manipulation. Looking more slowly leads to more thought, while the several words printed in upper case in a typeface four times larger than the text just add to the mystery. At the end, we smile along with the jack-o-lantern.

    Great for Preschoolers!

My 3yr-old loved this so much at school her teacher insisted we find it for home. As a preschooler, she loves categorizing things and defining things, and so the "surprise" at the end when this is NOT a pumpkin delights her every single time, even though she knows the book by heart. I highly recommend This Is NOT a Pumpkin for pre-readers and early readers.

I did not read this book through before I gave it to my son -- a potentially risky move on my part -- because as soon as he saw it, he wanted it.  So, we read it together.  My son, at the time, was three-and-a-half years old.  I wasn't sure he'd "get" the book.  I was wrong.  He laughed like a maniac when he reached the final two pages.   We read this book several more times -- that same day.  And he laughed, every time.
The cover, of course, is what my son saw first.  And it is quite tantalizing in a wonderfully Magritte sort of way.  This is, and probably will be, the only Bob Staake book where I can refer to the artwork as "illustration", as in singular.  But it works because it is a singular illustration.  I refuse to give away the ending, so no details on why the illustration works.
If you are looking for a book for a toddler or preschooler the Fall/Hallowe'en season, you cannot go wrong with this one.  My little boy still carries it everywhere.  And HE reads it.  All the time.

This is NOT a bad is a GREAT book.

I bought this book because it was a simple read and the pictures were nice and bright. I teach a group of children with special needs ages 3-5 and they absolutely loved this book. They ask for the book to be read over and over again. At this point they sit with the book on their own and 'read' the story to each other. It was a great find and I think that it should be a part of most daycare and preschool book collections.
