Children's LiteratureFour cumulative stories by Sarah Hayes (This is the Bear, This is the Bear and the Scary Night, This is the Bear and the Picnic Lunch, This is the Bear and the Bad Little Girl) that tell of the adventures of a little boy, his comfy bear, and his dog are dramatically told with delightfully appropriate voices. Following each story, children are encouraged to explore creative movement with actions suggested within the story. With funky accompanying music children pretend to flop like an old bear, swoop like an owl, fall and splash into a pond, be a grumpy old man, stroll through the park among others. Several tracks invite children to identify sounds, in groups of three, again based on the story they have just heard. The final track for each story is a dramatic reading by children in Readers' Theater style. While some of the dance and creative movement suggestions seem to stretch the limit and the musical interludes too long, in the hands of a parent or teacher who can manipulate what to use, toddlers and preschoolers will enjoy these games and activities. The wonderful British accents of the readers bring a lively, crisp rendition to these simple stories. It may be helpful for children to follow along with the picture book while listening to assist little ones in identifying Briticisms such a pram, lorry, rubbish bins, crisps, etc. Whether used one-on-one by parents, in toddler or preschool story time, for dance class, or guided imagery in drama, this CD has a variety of applications. 2004, Candlewick, Ages 2 to 5.
