Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Where does the rain come from and where does it go? Here is a rhyming explanation of the cycle of rainfall, showing young children the ocean mist that rises to the clouds and the raindrops on the river that flow back to the sea. Short pages of verse are coupled with cut-paper illustrations in this colorful book. 2001, Boyds Mills Press, $14.95. Ages 3 to 8. Reviewer: C. Leonard-Schmidling SOURCE: Parent Council, September 2001 (Vol. 9, No. 1)
Children's Literature
Brief rhymes take us from the ocean through the rain cycle as the sun lifts the moisture to clouds, which release the rain over the mountains. The rain forms brooks, which run into rivers, through valleys and marshes, back into the sea. The journey is described simply but in language rich with figurative description. Siomades parallels the text's versified telling with cut-paper creatures and landscapes designed more for eye-appeal than scientific accuracy. The double pages present pink porpoises, purple goats, and a gull riding a turtle; all recognizable but attractively simplistic, making the journey from cloud to ocean easy to follow. More facts are presented in prose at the end. 2001, Caroline House/Boyds Mills Press, $14.95. Ages 3 to 6. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-A rhyming text and colorful, crisp illustrations introduce the water cycle. The large eyes and smiles on most creatures lend a cheerful demeanor to the bright pictures. Purple goats drink from rocky pools, orange beavers swim in the river, and pink and purple dolphins grace their "watery world." A cut-paper collage and watercolor-gouache painting technique is used. The narrative takes readers from the ocean to the clouds, mountains, brooks, streams, rivers, and back to the ocean. It is fun and easy to read: "This is the ocean,/Always filled up/from shore to shore/like a briny cup" or "These are the mountains/that scrape the sky/and catch the cloud-ships/sailing by." This book could be used in conjunction with Arthur Dorros's Follow the Water from Brook to Ocean (HarperCollins, 1991).-Diane Olivo-Posner, Long Beach Public Library, CA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
