Mike Scott found artistic gold on "This is the Sea," a nine-song gem released in 1985. The strongest tracks include "The Whole of the Moon," "Spirit," "Trumpets" and the title track. There is a haunting and timeless sound achieved on the disc, and the use of piano and horns enhances the alt-rock vibe.

Expanding the epic, multi-layered sound of A Pagan Place, This is the Sea is a more ambitious yet a more successful record, since it finds Mike Scott at his melodic peak. Consequently, the album has enough strong, accessible moments to make his indulgences forgivable.
