Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
The most sacred and adored object of Judaism is the Torah, the first five books of the Bible purportedly given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai over 3200 years ago. Popular in its orientation, this book uses a question-and-answer format to address over 500 questions frequently asked about the Torah. Included are queries regarding its origin (divine or human?), its handling in the synagogue, and its use in the liturgy and service. Kolatch's authoritative answers encompass all branches of Judaism but lean heavily to a traditionalist approach. An excellent index adds to the usefulness of the book. For most popular Judaica collections.-- Robert A. Silver, Shaker Heights P.L., Ohio

    This is Excellent!

A very interesting book that answers 500 questions people ask about the first 5 books of the Bible. It offers a window into the values of the Jewish Rabbinic Society and their opinions about worship. Anyone wanting to learn more about the Jewish customs as they relate to worship will enjoy this book. I found this book of particular interest since it explains what the customs have been in the last millennium in regards to rules of hand copying the manuscripts. It also presents a clear presentation of the different classes of Hebrew Texts the Jewish people use today. It is well indexed and documented for further study and use. It left me challenged to make my own Hebrew copy by hand to experience the process and get more familiar with the Hebrew Scriptures themselves.
