Children's Literature - Melissa Rife
A starting point for young readers to begin learning about different cultures, this book discusses the many different ways people eat around the world. Each spread features one way of eating, such as with chopsticks, with a fork, or with a banana leaf. On one side is a picture of someone in a different country eating; on the opposite side is a brief paragraph of information with the main vocabulary word bolded. Not only does the book bolster cultural awareness, but it also features simple enough words that it is great for building reading skills and knowledge of geography. At the end of the pages, the book features a map of the world with all the countries mentioned throughout the book highlighted. Although I would prefer having a geographical point on each actual page where the country is named, the map at the end is better than nothing. While many of the eating methods featured aren't totally new to American children, there are some that are drastically different, such as eating using bread like we would use a fork or eating using a banana leaf. These pieces of information are the true gems of the book and make it worthwhile. Also included at the end of the book are an index, a glossary, and a list of references for further information. This book is part of Scholastic's "This is the Way" series. Reviewer: Melissa Rife
