Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Melissa Rife
Combining basic vocabulary, cultural information, and photography, this nonfiction book helps to teach about culture in relation to the various chores done around the world. The best thing about this book is the wide variety of tasks that are shown, none of which would be common to kids in the United States. On every page, kids are learning about something that is probably brand new to the book's readers. For example, few kids in the U.S. help to pick potatoes on their family's potato farm. Thus, readers learn a new context to something common in their lives—potatoes. Other chores that help to convey a new view on things that are totally normal in American children's lives: collecting water in jars from the river, gathering firewood to cook dinner, or making noodles. Each page features a different chore and bolded new vocabulary word. The opposing page shows a picture of that chore being done and a sentence identifying the location if the act, such as "This boy herds llamas in Peru." The end of the book includes an index, a table of contents, a glossary, and a map that shows the countries discussed throughout the book. Although it would have been nice to have some sort of geographical representation alongside the text, having it in the back is still a good inclusion. This book is a part of the "This is the Way" series; in my opinion, is the best of the series. Reviewer: Melissa Rife
