Overview

This lively board book marks the debut of Handprint's Nursery Play-Along Classics. This just-right-for-lap-time title features not only whimsical illustration and full text of a nursery favorite, but also an engaging picture-story expanding on the verse, and clear visual instructions to allow a parent to actively share the material in delightful, playful interludes with young listeners.

Our earliest awareness of language often comes from chanting beloved nursery rhymes. Equally important, they provide hours of funto recite, to act out, to extend into imaginative stories. The Nursery Play-Along Classics, illuminated in soft pencil and pastel hues, are the perfect and most enjoyable way to introduce these essential texts to babies and young toddlers.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Familiar rhymes are printed in bold text across the top of each page. A subtext that expands on the rhyme is placed below the illustrations. In this board book, we learn why one little piggy had none (she was late for lunch), and also why the last little piggy cried all the way home. The inside cover shows caregivers the hand/body actions for sharing the rhyme with young children. The illustrations in soft pastel tones include many items to look at and could elicit further discussion. A delightful new packaging for familiar material. Other titles in "A Nursery Play-Along Classic" series include Jack and Jill, Hickory Dickory Dock and Pat-A-Cake. 2005, Handprint Books, Ages 1 to 3.

Kirkus Reviews
This board-book version of the nursery rhyme combines lines from the classic with an imagined story to round it out. The first little pig goes to the market to sell flowers; the second stays home to complete chores. The third has lunch with his neighbor, but the fourth forgets about the lunch date. And the last pig makes an unwise decision when he allows a chicken to play with his balloon. The final page shows a father holding his son's toes alongside the complete rhyme. Less successful than others in the Nursery Play-Along Classic series, this one's flaw is in the overly busy and divided nature of the illustrations. Dobson's pages show multiple actions of each pig, enriching the story, but losing the youngest listeners who will be confused by too much detail in too small a picture-each spread has from four to seven vignettes. Stick with others in the series. (Board book. 1-3)
