Overview

I know you're up in heaven, God,
and can hear my voice from there.
I'm just a little child.
Will you answer my short prayer?

Bestselling author Anthony DeStefano believes that prayer is the greatest gift you can give a child. Using simple language and rhyme--written as a heartfelt prayer--this story expresses a child's understanding of our loving, faithful God. It encourages little ones to go beyond asking God for things to trusting Him for courage when feeling afraid, joy when sad or lonely, and guidance when confused or unsure.

Mark Elliott's beautiful, photo-realistic illustrations of children in everyday situations keep young readers turning the pages to see what comes next. When the last page has been turned and the amen has been said, little ones will understand that prayer is a simple conversation with God--easy, natural, and everlasting.

    Sure to become a classic!!

I just adore this book. It's message is so wonderful (and not just for children, either) and reminds us that God is always there waiting to hear from us. I loved it because it emphasizes that God is with us always and He will guide us - all we have to do is ask. It also reminds us that He is our friend ready and waiting to comfort us.

The illustrations are just wonderful! As an artist myself, I enjoy books that have beautiful artwork and this book is in that category. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the illustrations because they were so true to life. I also found myself feeling heartbreak from some of the pictures because they pulled me in and made me think of similar situations in my life.

The combination of the words and pictures in the book are powerful. Any child would love this book and I wish the book had been around when my children were young. I know it would have become a favorite for them. However, I'm keeping this book for future grandchildren because I know it will be a special book to share between them and granny. :)

I was very encouraged by this book myself and know that a child would be. It's comforting to know that the Lord is there for us and that He cares so much for us. It's a blessing to know that He is just a prayer away.

I highly recommend you adding this book to your library. It's sure to become a favorite and, in my opinion, a classic.

    Great little book.

I thought this was a great little book. The words are engaging yet easy enough for young readers to read alone. Its a simple way to teach children to depend on God by letting Him know what their fears and cares are. It is a great blueprint for young ones just learning to "talk" to God.This would make a great bedtime book. The illustrations are amazing. Be sure to check this out as a gift for young ones.

This Little Prayer of Mine--teaching the importance of prayer

This Little Prayer of Mine, written by Anthony DeStefano and illustrated by Mark Elliot, teaches children that they can talk to God about anything--their wants, their fears, their joys ... anything! It's a rhyming poem, and each stanza is illustrated. This is a cute book that small children are sure to enjoy looking through and having read to them. While it's too long to memorize and recite at bedtime, it certainly should help instill in children the importance of prayer.

Illustrated prayer is instant bedtime classic

This Little Prayer of Mine by Anthony DeStefano and Mark Elliot is the perfect read for bedtime. First Mia's review: The book is a prayer to God. It's something that I would say to Him. The picture of the little boy being left alone by his friends made me feel sad. I thought the pictures were very pretty. I liked that there was a picture of a pilot in it, because I want to be a pilot when I grow up. Now my review: I thought this book was fantastic, because it shows children that they can pray to God about anything. Whether they are afraid or feeling left out or sad or even guilty, they can turn to God in prayer and know that He will listen. Elliot's artwork is outstanding, very realistic but with a touch of whimsy. The ending brought a few tears to my eyes, because of the childlike, innocent faith and trust DeStefano has perfectly captured. While this is a bit longer than the traditional "Now I lay me down to sleep" prayer, this would make an excellent substitute!

    Incredible Cute

My kids really liked this book. It was very cute. My son could read it himself, and he really enjoyed it. Then he liked reading it to his sisters. The pictures are very well done. I love how it really just sounds like something a kid would say to God. I think this will be a book my kids read often.

    Great Children's book about prayer

Book Review- This Little Prayer of Mine

    This Little Prayer of mine
    By: Anthony Destefano
    Illustrated by: Mark Elliott
    (A Children's Book)

From the Back of the book:
I know you're up in heaven, God, and can hear my voice from there. I'm just a little child. Will you answer my short prayer? So begins this delightful book that affirms God's readiness to answer our prayers, no matter what our age.

    My thoughts:
This is a great addition to our bookshelf. The book is goes through a prayer of a young child through all the different emotions and events that they may pray about. I believe it is a good book to show a child how easy it is to pray. I am also in love with the pictures in this book, they are so simple yet so pretty the colors are very vibrant. My young daughter is able to sit through the book as it is a simple short read, and the pictures hold her attention very well. Overall I give this book at 5 out of 5 stars I found it to be a good read for young children.

I can't get enough of this book

This Little Prayer of Mine by Anthony DeStefano is such a beautiful little book. It follows a little child¿s prayer from beginning to end and illustrates everything the child is feeling along the way. A child¿s prayer is the sweetest thing and this book captures that special innocence. With its sing-song tone, I immediately was swept away with DeStefano¿s words. I also love the illustrations. Each page is so pretty and filled with imagination. This is a book that I can see cherishing for many years to come as my daughter gets older. My favorite part is that the book only tells one child¿s prayer and doesn¿t go any further. It leaves the door open for the parent to step in with a discussion about their own personal beliefs about the importance of prayer and the power that can come with that. It would be the perfect opportunity to strengthen your child¿s convictions on a regular basis.

Great book for the children in your life!

The book this Little Prayer of Mine is a great one to read with your children before bed. It reminds children that they can talk to God about anything. It helps them to see that nothing is too silly to mention to God and that he is always listening. The book is in rhyme and is easy for children to follow along. Illustrations are beautiful and that artwork clearly illustrates the text. This book would also make a great gift for any child.

Start talking about (and living) a life of prayer

This Little Prayer of Mine is a children's book about prayer. Prayer, talking with God, is vital in our Christian walk. However, as adults we tend to either ignore it or complicate it. I want my kids to desire to spend time with God and to simply come to Him with their childlike faith. The books is simply and clearly written, but beautifully and boldly illustrated. With four kids ages 7 and under, I have lot of experience with books for kids. I would highly recommend it. Read it with your kids and let it start (or continue) a conversation that will encourage a lifetime relationship with God that is open and honest. Since this is a children's book, I wanted to also share my older kids' opinions of This Little Prayer of Mine. After we read it a couple of times, I asked, "What did you think of this book?"... . Eva (age 4) - "I liked it." When I asked for her to be more specific, she said, "I loved it!" . Hannah (age 6) - "I like it because they talk to God just like He's here like a friend." She also wanted to make sure that it was our book to keep! (Meaning: not a library book that we have to return) . Abbye (age 7) - "It will help lots of people because they learn that they can talk to God in any place and about anything. It reminded me that even when I'm afraid, I can talk to Him. I like that they helped the poor in the book. Even though I'm a kid, I know that God loves me and you too!" New Family Favorite

This Little Prayer of Mine is a gem of a kids' book! I was thrilled when I opened it up and found it to be a Christian kids' book that had such substance and depth. This is not your everyday collection of watery kids' prayers. DeStefano leads children through a prayer for strength, joy, wisdom, charity and much more. This prayer is a prayer that adults could stand to pray each night as well, but it is completely accessible to children of all ages.

I read this book to my two little kids tonight in the hopes that they would have some of that great childish insight the kids like to toss at adults from time to time. My 5 year old liked that there were words in the book. My 2 year old said he liked that the pages had writing on them. Not their most insightful moment. I turned it over to the 10 year old. She said she likes it and thinks it's a good book, "especially for little kids." (Translation: it is not a book for children of 10.)

While the children didn't have anything particularly amazing to say about the book, they did all like it. My 5 year old, in fact, wanted to sleep with it tonight. And I enjoyed reading it. It's a great book to read to your children as a prayer for the entire family. It's so easy to let prayer for and with each other to slip through the cracks in a busy household and this is a perfect way to engage the youngest family members in prayer. This book is definitely going to become a staple in our bedtime repertoire and will be a great one to remember for gifts in the future.

There are some regulations that obligate me to tell you that I received a review copy of this book for free from the publisher. While I'm obligated to tell you that, I'm not obligated to review the book favorably. The favorable review is just 'cuz we really liked it!

Prayer, hope and a lovely story for children

This Little Prayer of Mine written by Anthony DeStefano with illustrations by Mark Elliot is a book for young readers full of faith, hope and prayer. With its rhyming verse, the book does a wonderful job of bringing in the various aspects of prayer into a typical child's day. There are different trials, joys and the reminder for all the things to be thankful for.
A particularly poignant part of the book showed a scene where a boy is all alone while all the other kids are hanging out without him- a very relatable circumstance for most kids- and the child is leaning on God to know that He is with him and that "everything's all right". Mark Elliot's illustrations particularly on this page of the book are spot on and really showed the emotion on his face at being "left out".
I think this book would be so reassuring for young children to read or be read to. It encourages them to know that through whatever circumstance you face, there is nothing to fear because God is with you. He has plans for your future and the sky is the limit where God is concerned. I would definitely recommend this book for those wanting to foster their children's hearts towards prayer. It beautifully shows the ongoing dialogue that they can have with God throughout all aspects of their lives. I recommend this book for pre-school to early elementary aged children.

Disclosure-I was graciously provided with a free copy of this book through the Blogging for Books program in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed are my own.

    This Little Prayer of Mine

This Little Prayer of Mine by Anthony DeStefano

If you have small children or grandchildren this is the perfect book to explain prayer to them. It is beautifully written and illustrated and is a perfect bedtime story. I read it to my one year old grandson, and while I know he didn't understand right now, he was captivated by the lovely illustrations. I will continue to read it to him as he gets older. This would also be a good pre-teen read as it explains in verse form that God hears all their prayers and they need not be long drawn out. Sometimes children hear the adults pray in Sunday School or in church and they think they need to use the same kind of 'grown-up' words in order for God to hear them. This book lets them know that God hears all prayers both big and small.

    Beautiful children's book

Young children just naturally accept the concept of talking to God. If we instruct them in prayer at a young age, they will develop a relationship with God in a very real and personal way that will last a lifetime. A very good resource for introducing prayer is This Little Prayer of Mine by Anthony DeStefano. This book contains a simple rhyming prayer that covers so many facets of a child's world: fear, sadness, joy, happiness, disappointment, obedience, thankfulness, and helping others. Add to that a heart of praise and worship and you have a perfect beginning for life lessons on prayer. Mark Elliott's full color illustrations take this prayer and bring it to life as only a good artist can do. As a parent and former Children's Church director I can easily see a place for this book at home and in the classroom. The combination of words and pictures create a book that is perfect for bedtime reading with Mom and Dad at the end of the day.

    Highly recommended!

This is a really sweet poetic book that's a great way to teach younger kids what praying is all about. The best time for our children to learn about having a healthy prayer life is when they are young. This Little Prayer of Mine tells them to talk to God about all kinds of things, not just to pray solely to ask God for things. The book encourages children to talk to God throughout their day, as if they're talking to a friend, to tell Him about their feelings and to thank Him for His goodness. God desires for us all to have that childlike faith, to wholly trust in Him to take care of us and to love us. This book is short enough that it makes a great bedtime book to read over and over again. The illustrations by Mark Elliot are fabulous. This Little Prayer of Mine is actually endorsed by the National Day of Prayer and I highly recommend that you add this sweet book to your child's library!

    Sweet Book!

This book is darling. The illustrations are bright and colorful, and the writing is appealing to children. I am excited to share this book with our foster children. I am planning on putting it on their bookshelf to read to them. This Little Prayer of Mine holds a great deal of comfort for scary times as well as thanksgiving for the happy things in life. The pictures poignantly teach right from wrong.

    One of the sweetest lines:
Whenever I feel really scared and want to hide my head,
Please help me to be brave and strong and face my fears instead.

    This Little Prayer of Mine

"...I think that kids are capable of understanding deep truths about God, and the world is FULL of watered-down versions of who He is. Kids grow up absorbing messages of self-reliance and purposing your life after fame and fortune, so when we talk to children about God and how to relate to Him in prayer we should be cautious and intentional. It shouldn't look like we are trying to fashion prayer to fit a world view that conforms with culture.
"There is much praise on the cover for this book encouraging the imperative teaching of prayer to children. My recommendation is that instead of reading this book to your kids, you pray with them. Pour out your heart to God before them, showing them how to ask for help, believe, hope, trust and wait on God. And save story time for something with a plot."

    This Little Prayer of Mine

    My Synopsis:

This Little Prayer of Mine by Anthony DeSefano and illustrated by Mark Elliot

This Little Prayer of Mine is a beautiful hardcover storybook for children. It is filled with beautiful illustrations and rhymes that flow off the tongue that are easy to remember. Children will learn so much from this book about God's love and how he answers our prayers even as a little child. They will learn what kinds of things to pray for and how they can trust God no matter what their situation is or what their future might hold.

    My Thoughts:

I don't usually review children's books, but this one really caught my eye. The cover is just gorgeous and the rhymes are beautiful. It's a book that I would have loved to have had for my children when they were younger, to help teach them about prayer.

Often, I think we as parents forget that our little ones sometimes need to talk to God too. Something that may seem insignificant to us, may really bother a child. I think the author of the book really understood the kinds of things that our kids may need to pray about. Things that may frighten them or make them sad. I want my kids to know that God is there for them too and I believe this book could be instrumental in teaching that.

This is one of my favorite rhymes from the book:

Whenever I feel really scared and want to hide my head.
Please help me to be brave and strong and face my fears instead.

LOL! I still feel that way sometimes! Prayer is a conversation with God and want my kids to feel like they can talk to him and I loved this book because it gives children that assurance that it's OK for them to seek God too.

    Blog Tour

As many of you know I have done Blog Tours for WaterBrook Multnomah Press for the past couple of years. Usually the books I have done are of the Christian Living/ Discipleship genre. One of the more recent requests was a break from my usual fare but I thought it would be worth a shot. As always, this book was provided for review by the WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group.

This Little Prayer of Mine, by Anthony DeStefano and illustrated Mark Elliot, is a children's book about our simple requests to God. The illustrations are beautiful and lifelike. The writing is from the perspective of a child saying their bedtime prayers. Requests for courage in the face of fear, smile to replace tears, wisdom to make right decisions and forgiveness for wrongs done are among the requests made. There is thankfulness for the things God gives us and for the beauty of the seasons, for the help to be generous with our possessions. The prayer ends with acknowledging the unknown of the future but trusting in God plan as best, and of all the things we could ever have knowing that God loves us is enough.

If you are looking for a book to give to a child (yours or someone else's) or to buy for your churches Children's Ministry, this book would be a perfect for such occasions.

    Now for a child's perspective-

I'm Sarai, and this is my Daddy's blog. Let me tell you what I think of this book. I just love it, the pictures remind me of kids like me. The book is about a child's prayer to God. They pray for the same things that I pray for. I think all kids will really like this book. Ok, I'm going to go play ball now, bye.
