Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Happily, this version of the old favorite . . . is devised with cleverness and wit, making it more than just an illustrated version of the song." Booklist, ALA
Children's Literature - Wendy Keen
Jones takes the traditional children's song and turns it into a guessing game. Each illustration shows a scene between a child and a "nick-nack" playing grandfather. Clues help young readers guess what Grandfather will play "nick-nack" upon next. Readers unfamiliar with the tune will find a musical arrangement at the end of the book, as well as the written verses with chorus. A great addition to any daycare or kindergarten library. Jones' illustrations are guaranteed to promote a smile. 1998 (orig.

PreS-Gr 1-- A clever, entertaining, and well-designed addition to illustrated songbook collections. As she did in Old MacDonald Had a Farm (Houghton, 1989), Jones accompanies a well-loved children's song with detailed ink and watercolor illustrations. An elderly but vital old man and a young girl read, garden, build, picnic, and, in between, use the drumsticks otherwise tucked in his boot to ``play knick knack'' on well-known objects. Center-cut peek-a-boo holes reveal the drum, shoe, etc., before the text identifies them. When the pages are turned, the holes serve as frames for portraits of the little girl. Children will enjoy the game elements: peek-a-boo identification, watching the dog collect yet another bone, and looking for hidden numerals in the pictures. Robin Michal Koontz's This Old Man (Dodd, 1988) is more comical but less imaginative than this version. --Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, WI
