Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
Take a vacation on the ocean floor or join an expedition to Mars? Both sound pretty cool, right? Before making a decision, keep in mind that the ocean vacation requires sleep in an underwater suite with floor-to-ceiling windows and views of a lagoon teeming with sharks, manta rays, and thousands of other fishy friends. A trip to Mars sound better? An application is required to apply to be one of forty adventurers going to the red planet in 2023. Make the cut and undergo seven years of astronaut training and simulated Martian living. Oh, and the trip to Mars is a one-way ticket. You will become a permanent Martian. Decisions, decisions. Every hour of every day is full of decisions. This or that, which will it be? This is a book of choices, but do not worry about making a wrong choice as there are absolutely none. The book contains an introduction, nine chapters, credits, page numbers, and one hundred seventy six glossy pages. Although a wonderful read and resource, the book is troublesome as each chapter ends with “Doc Talk” by Dr. Matt Bellace, a psychologist and stand-up comedian who, in fun, “analyzes” the decisions made. The book easily stands alone without the input of “Doc” and probably should have been published as such. In describing this feature, page seven states that “through exploration and analysis of the inner workings of your mind he will peel you back layer by layer and you will not even realize it! But keep in mind these scenarios are just for fun. Do not like the results? Take the quiz again.” Now the decisions have become quizzes? Use caution as this book is disappointing, troublesome, and possibly a disservice to readers and those who purchase the book. Reviewer: Suzanne Javid; Ages 8 to 12.
