Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"As Collicutt did in This Train, handsome paintings of airplanes are paired with brief text describing one aspect of each plane

. . . A good introduction for readers who love transportation."

The Horn Book

"The high-interest topic is sure to make this book a hit with many pre-schoolers, who will undoubtedly want to hear it read repeatedly while they study the details in the illustrations."

Publishers Weekly
A companion to This Train, this book pairs minimal text with vivid, purplish paintings of various busy aircraft. Ages 3-6. (Sept.)
Children's Literature
This picture information book has a single sentence per page, each of which begins, "This plane...." From a paper plane to the Concorde with many planes between, the book is a beginner's delight of aviation history. There are 22 planes illustrated in vivid colors with the one simple statement describing each plane's unique feature. The background for each illustration is applicable. For example, the Harrier jump jet takes off vertically with a skyscraper city in view and the plane that drops water does so over a raging forest fire. The endpapers show additional planes, historical and current, with names, country of origin and other pertinent information. As a companion book to This Train by the same author/illustrator, it is a book that clearly says more than is written. Its text may be suitable for very young children, but older readers will benefit from the action and detail of the illustrations. 2000, Farrar Straus Giroux, Ages 5 to 10, $15.00. Reviewer: Jacki Vawter
Leonard S. Marcus
Feverishly dramatic, retro-style paintings of old-and new-fangled flying machines are eye candy for preschoolers who have a passion for things airborne. Readers will find the quirky color combinations either cool or creepy. Captions serve up one fact about each craft.
