Overview

Allie Ross is not living the life she once dreamed. Her law career ended before it ever started, her parents landed in jail for running a Ponzi scheme, and she just inherited her grandmother’s B&B—which is nice, even if it is full of extra-toed cats. As for her love life…she’d rather not talk about it.

When Jack Carpenter reaches out to reconnect with Allie, the girl who broke his heart in college, his plan is to impress her with the adult he’s become. Sure, he was a deadbeat then, but life has forced him to grow up. And it’s a relief to find out that things didn’t necessarily go the way Allie expected either.

As Allie and Jack get reacquainted, they rediscover the things they loved—and hated—about each other. But who they are now isn’t who they were then, and secrets—old and new—will test whether they have a future together, or if the past is destined to repeat itself.

In Fenske’s newest second-chance love story set in Portland, Ore. (after Now That It’s You), a hapless woman finds that misunderstandings almost outnumber the extra-toed cats she’s inherited along with her grandmother’s B and B. Jack Carpenter was a screwup when he was in college, but he loved Allie Ross, despite her nitpicking ways and constant demands. Allie’s unstoppable need to have everything go as planned led her to end her romance with carefree and spontaneous Jack. Sixteen years later, Jack, now a wealthy business owner, widower, and single father to 10-year-old Paige, returns to Portland to attend his high school reunion, eager to show Allie how wrong she was about his future. Allie’s own life is a trail of wreckage, including four failed engagements and parents serving time for orchestrating a Ponzi scheme. Outspoken Paige and the often embarrassing contents of Allie’s grandma’s attic add a special blend of comedy and suspense as Jack and Allie reunite. The lovers let their pride and insecurities get in the way, but readers will gladly join them on their journey to self-improvement. Agent: Michelle Wolfson, Wolfson Literary. (Apr.)

"He was still kissing her and the sensation was both foreign and familiar, like revisiting the scene of a party where he'd had too much champagne." Yes - I LOVE a second chance romance! Tawna Fenske nailed this wonderful story of a second chance of love and happiness for Jack and Ali. We are shown what 16 years apart has done to mature our hero and heroine. The loss, the happiness and the change of course each of them took. As they come back together, they learn to fall in love with the people they have become. And move past who they used to be. I feel the author told the story in a very unique way, and very different than other second chance romances I have read. Romantic love, parental love and the love a good friend are wonderfully portrayed. I truly loved the characters and loved the book. I really did not want it to end!

I really love Tawna' Fenske humor. She always makes me smile and laugh out loud with her books. Reading romance with some humor is a great way to spend the day! This Time Around is one of those books. I enjoyed this second chance romance featuring Alli and Jack and of course Jack's daughter Paige. Paige was a added delight to the book. PS As an owner of a 6-toed cats they really are simply the best!!

Another fabulous offering from Fenske, THIS TIME AROUND shows how finding the right person isn't the only thing that matters in a successful romance. Finding the right person _at the right time_ is crucial to the success of a relationship. Jack and Allie always had the spark, but it isn't until life offers them a second chance to connect that the conditions are right to ignite the spark into a blaze that promises to last a lifetime. Bonus: Jack's adorable daughter, Paige, brings tons of personality into the mix. Absolutely loved this book!

Tawna Fenske delivers again!! We've all been there: had that one ex who we always swore that if we ran into them again in the future, we would throw all our achievements in their face. Show them how great we are doing in spite of them. Jack is no different. almost 2 decades ago, his fiance Allie walked out on him. She claimed he wasn't on the same path as she was and they wanted different things. Now, almost 20 years later, things certainly have changed. Jack is doing great. As a widow and single dad, he's striving to raise his daughter to be able to come to him with any questions she may have. They've moved back to his hometown and he thinks this is a great opportunity to "catch up" with Allie. If by catch up, you really mean show her just how wrong she was about him. Only things don't go as planned. Again. Allie left Jack because she wanted it all. She wanted marriage and a family and the great law job to go with it. Now she works as a Certified Association Executive and just inherited her grandmother's B&B--which is now a sanctuary to some really weird thumbed cats! Needless to say things turned out much different than she expected. When she gets an email from Jack all these years later, she tries to be the person she left him to be. They make an attempt to "try again" but it's not that easy. Jack has responsibilities now. He has a daughter who he has to put first. And Allie isn't the same person anymore either. Or is she? Can you ever really go back? Tawna spins an amazing tale of two people trying to be who they were while still trying to figure out who they want to be. Known for her quirky (off beat, funky, you catch my drift) characters, Fenske still manages to make them relate-able. And different from other characters in her previous books. Alli & Jack are just like so many people I know. They are the people I went to high school with. The people I knew from my first job. They are the people I know now from my kids' friends' parents. They aren't caricatures or these asinine outlines of what you expect them to be. Their flaws are realistic. And yes, they are quirky. But unlike some authors who try to make their heroes and heroines "eccentric," they aren't cringeworthy. Their awkward moments are ones we probably all have experienced, and then subsequently denied! I love Tawna Fenske. As a rule, her books are fun and flirty. They are easy reads because you "easily get involved" not because the plot and characters are basic. I strongly recommend this book to anyone looking for a "beach read" or something to take up a weekend. I read it start to finish in about 18 hours-- and that's because my toddler and infant weren't amenable to me taking a break from "mommying." I may or may not have fed the toddler a pre-made sandwich so I could finish it!

Alli Ross was always had dreams of a successful career, a doting husband and beautiful children. Sixteen years after breaking it off with her first love, he's back in her life, a widowed father with an amazing career, while Alli is driving the same car she had back in college. Meanwhile, Jack Carpenter wants to show the woman that walked out on him just how well he turned out, with his own successful company and wonderful daughter. Though they haven't seen each other for sixteen years, they easily fall back into their old friendship, and discover that the spark they felt as teens is still there, stronger than ever, but the problems that led to their split back in college could pull them apart again. I really enjoyed all of the character's in this story. There's an on-going subplot surrounding Alli's family that is at times funny for all the wrong reasons, and other times heartbreakingly sad. Jack's ten-year old daughter Paige is so cleverly written, witty, with a great sense of humor and on point for her age group. And Jack and Alli are so easy to root for, almost from the moment they see each other again. Both have been handed some hard knocks in the years they were apart, but you get the feeling they can provide each other the strength to get through the rough times, but they also share some amazing chemistry and tenderness. Tawna Fenske has become a must read author for me, and this book is no exception! ARC received in exchange for an honest review.

3.75 stars--THIS TIME AROUND by Tawna Fenske is a stand alone, adult, contemporary, romantic story line focusing on the rekindling relationship between Certified Association Executive Allie Ross, and ‘app’ developer Jack Carpenter. Told from dual third person perspectives (Allie and Jack) Allie Ross and Jack Carpenter were once high school sweethearts and college lovers but sixteen years had passed since the day Allie pushed Jack Carpenter out of her life. Fast forward to present day wherein our heroine struggles with the knowledge that not all is right in her ordered world-law school never came to fruition; her parents are in prison for running a Ponzi scheme that bilked hundreds of thousands of dollars from clients and friends; her beloved grandmother recently passed bequeathing Allie a former B&B that now is home to sixteen polydactyl cats; and the man that Allie once loved has returned to town with a ten year old daughter, potentially looking for a second chance, at a happily ever after. What ensues is the rekindling romance between Allie and Jack, and Allie’s discovery that her grandmother’s attic is a Pandora’s box of secrets and lies. Allie Ross grew up privileged but the man that Allie loved was never good enough or determined to make something of his life. Allie had plans to attend university then law school but life had a way of interfering pulling Allie in another direction. Jack Carpenter left town and made a name for himself following several years of struggle and the death of the woman he once called lover and wife. With his ten year old daughter in tow Jack returns to the town he once called home, and the woman he is hoping to rekindle the spark. The relationship between Jack and Allie is one of second chances but Allie is reluctant to reveal everything about her life. Throughout the story Allie begins to shed the protective walls that have encompassed her heart but too many secrets revealed finds our hero walking away without a backwards glance. The $ex scenes are limited, intimate and sensual. We are introduced to Allie’s ex fiancé and best friend Wade, her parents Priscilla and Nathan Ross, Rosewood B&B custodian Skye, as well as Jack’s ten year old daughter Paige. The world building focuses on the rebuilding relationship between Jack and Allie but also on a lifetime of secrets that slowly begin to eat at Allie’s façade. THIS TIME AROUND is a spirited and hopeful story line with a little bit of humor, romance, guilt and love. The premise is idealistic and heartwarming; the characters are colorful and realistic; the romance is passionate and emotional. THIS TIME AROUND follows one woman as she battles the realities of life and love.

I am not a fan of second chance romance books, but this one changed my mind. When Jack and Allie reunite, their relationship didn't just pick up where it stopped. That made the characters and plot a lot more believable. This is also one of the few books I've read where a location is a character in itself. Everytime someone went to the attic or mentioned the attic, I found my eyes wandering the page to see what new thing comes up. I loved this book, and it makes me want to read more second chance books. I received an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 1/2 When we meet Jack he is coming back to Portland Oregon. One of his first order of business is to meet up with his old flame Allie. This first meeting is hilarious. It doesn’t quite go according as planned. When Jack offers to help Allie at the B&B everything changes. Jack & Allie learn so much about themselves and each other. That had they stayed together their lives may not have turned out as amazing. This was such a fun second chance at love story. It almost makes me wish I had someone in my past to reconnect..... Nope! I will leave that to Jack and Allie. I had the honor of listening to this book. I do love me some audio books. This was my first story to have Ms. Robins narrat for me. She did a good job. My biggest issue was the male voices. At times it was a little hard tell the difference between Allie and Jack. I am not sure if it was because I was listening in the car? Or if there was just not enough difference in the depth of the voice. If you are looking for a fun second chance at true love read you really should pick up a copy of This Time Around! If you are an audio book love go listen to the sample of this story! Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Tawna Fenske & Brilliance Audio in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

For a lot of years Allie Ross lived a privileged life, could afford things most couldn't, and had certain expectations for how things in her life should be...but sometimes things don't go as planned. After her parents try pulling off an elaborate ponzi scheme and wind up getting busted, the family fortune takes a hit, and soon after Allie finds herself living a meager life. She is certain that if her ex-fiance could see her now he'd get a kick out of her misfortune, being that she dumped him for not being able to provide her with he lavish lifestyle she was accustom to and wanted to maintain. So, when he contacts her out of the blue wanting to have dinner and catch-up, panic sets in, she is single, broke, and living a life she never planned on, she can't let him see her this way. So, she devises a little plan, one that involves a fake fiance, fancy meal, and a fib here and there... now she just has to hope everything goes off without a hitch! Jack Carpenter has always been curious how life turned out for his ex-fiance Allie, she always had big dreams, with a big price tag, and Jack never really fit into her life plan. He is certain if she could see him now, she'd be kicking herself for letting him go, he's rich, successful, and so far from the man she knew 16 years ago. So, when he decides to make the trip home for a college reunion, he decides to look her up, and finally see if she is living the lavish life she always planned on, and also maybe rub her nose in his success a little too. But once he is on her doorstep, and witnesses the woman she has become, his plan for a little plan for revenge gets pushed to back burner, because the Allie he sees now completely takes his breath away... Nothing warms your heart quite like witnessing two wounded souls find their way back to one another, and rekindle a romance they thought was lost, and I have to say "This Time Around" was a shining example of just that. Allie and Jack thought they had it all, but soon after getting engaged they figured out that they wanted different things out of life, so they chose to go their separate ways. Now we find them years later, not exactly living the lives they had planned on, and so when an opportunity to reunite comes about it has them acting out of character just to try to impress one another. But after a few minutes together, they begin to realize that they are not fooling one another, they see right through the lies, and realize the spark that once lingered between them is still there. Now these two must decide if the issues that they had in the past will define their new relationship, or if they will learn from past mistakes and choose a new path towards their second chance at love? This was my first read from Ms. Fenske and I have to say between her touching and humorous story line and quirky & lovable characters(Paige was definitely my favorite!) she totally won me over. I love a good second chance romance story, and I have to say this one definitely hit the mark, it had me smiling the whole way through!! Highly recommend it!!! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this title.
