Thomas R. Kelly as I remember him.
As a Haverford College transfer senior just arrived from Wilmington College of Ohio, Tom Kelly sat on the porch with Rufus M. Jones, Haverfords Professor of Philosophy, looked up at him with radiant smile and said suddenly, Im just going to make my life a miracle! It was only in the last three years of Tom Kellys life, the years in which I knew him, that the miracle came to full expression. He lived, to use his own term, a God intoxicated life. He brimmed over with the joy of the Lord. In spite of the darkness and death of World War II into which humankind was plunging, Thomas Kelly called us to, Look to Him and be radiant (Ps. 37:5). He went on to say, Radiant with that radiance the Day Star can arise in astounding power and overcome the darkness both within and without, if we be wholly committed to the Light.

About the Author

T. Canby Jones (1921-2014) was born in Japan to Quaker missionary parents, and grew up at Fisk University, Nashville, Tennessee. He graduated from Westtown School, Pennsylvania, in 1938 and from Haverford College, Pennsylvania, in 1942. At Haverford he found love for God through his friendship with philosophy teacher Thomas R. Kelly. While serving in labor camps for conscientious objectors to World War II, Canby discovered Christ at the center of his faith. He also married Eunice Meeks of Danville, Indiana. After work with the American Friends Service Committee both in north Norway and in the United States, Canby and Eunice moved to Yale Divinity and Yale Graduate Schools in New Haven, Connecticut.

After the birth of their son Timothy and seven years of study Canby received the B.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Yale. The family then moved to Wilmington College of Ohio in 1955 where Canby taught Religion and Philosophy until retirement in 1987. Canby was the author of two books, George Foxs Attitude Toward War, 1972 and 1984 and The Power of the Lord is Over All: The Pastoral Letters of George Fox, 1989. He helped found both the Quaker Theological Discussion Group and Friends Association for Higher Education. He traveled widely in national and international ministry among Friends of all persuasions.
