Description: This book offers an excellent introduction to the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative management of general thoracic surgical patients.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a review of the core concepts of thoracic anesthesia as well as suggestions for the practical management of common challenges in the care of thoracic surgery patients. This book represents an impressive accomplishment of those worthy goals.
Audience: It is appropriate for students and residents learning about thoracic anesthesia, but it also would be a useful reference for practicing anesthesiologists who do thoracic cases only occasionally.
Features: Although there are sections on the preoperative work-up and postoperative management of patients undergoing thoracic surgery, the majority of the book is devoted to summaries of the common operations performed in the chest and their associated anesthetic issues. The chapters are clear and well written, and contain insightful and up-to-date discussions of alternatives for patient management. There are relatively few figures, but it is likely that more images would make the book harder to carry around the OR, which is one of its attractions. The images that are included are clear and useful.
Assessment: In short, this is an extremely well-written overview of thoracic anesthesia that trainees and practitioners can carry to the OR as a ready reference.
