Harald the Skull-Splitter and fellow chief Magnus the Bone-Breaker find a massive treasure chest in the remote Western Isles of Scotland. Thorfinn and his rival Olaf must guard it overnight, but despite their best efforts, they can't help falling asleep. In the morning the treasure has disappeared and now Thorfinn's village is at stake. Can Thorfinn the Nicest Viking and his friends find the missing loot in time to save their village?

About the Author

David MacPhail left home at eighteen to travel the world and have adventures. After working as a chicken wrangler, a ghost-tour guide and a waiter on a tropical island, he now has the sensible job of writing about yetis and Vikings. At home in Perthshire, Scotland, he exists on a diet of cream buns and zombie movies. David is also the author of Yeti on the Loose and the Thorfinn the Nicest Viking series. Richard Morgan was born and raised by goblins on the Yorkshire moors. He has painted backgrounds for Disney TV and now writes and illustrates children's books. He lives in Cambridge, England, and has a family of goblins of his own.

Being some of the exploits of Thorfinn the Very-Very-Nice-Indeed.Being clever as well as unfailingly polite, Thorfinn—youngest son of Harald the Skull-Splitter and best friends with axe-wielding Velda the, er, girl—not only recovers a stolen treasure (which he then donates to the Mangy Elks Protection League), but saves his village and all of Norway from an unscrupulous Viking chief. Morgan's loosely drawn ink-and-wash cartoons add appropriately comical notes, as does the dialogue ("Oh, don't be such a drama queen," sighs the bad guy to the apoplectic Harald) and occasional outsized belch. In the co-published Thorfinn the Nicest Viking and the Raging Raiders, the mannerly marauder leads an expedition to "rescue" his mother from an Icelandic spa while getting to the bottom, as it were, of a shocking atrocity: "What kind of sick, twisted person would burn another Viking's underpants!?" Readers may want to know, too. Each adventure closes with a game or puzzle or some bits of Viking lore, plus a sheet of detachable trading cards. Unsurprisingly, the characters all appear to be white. Brains trump brawn every time—at least for this horn-helmed peacemaker. (Historical farce. 8-10)
