Pros: Fun. Great lessons. Very affordable. Sweet. Promotes working together and respecting nature. Love the illustrations Cons: Need more pictures! Some words intimidating. Feel bad on how tired those dogs must be. While my opinion is noteworthy, what is more important is that of my eight year old. She is normally not someone who has the attention span to listen to stories, but she listened intently to this story. I had to keep checking the bed to see if that was her. At one point I thought she was asleep and in her sleepiness she mumbled "Keeep Readingggg..." Her exact words were "I really like the story. The chimpanzee is my favorite. Molly is my favorite dog. She is the girl dog. And I like the hippo". She is interested enough now to go back and re-read the story herself. As a dad, I really liked the fact there was a sweet tone, and nice message woven in the story that drew great lessons to the reader. There was a subtle but not preachy message of working together, learning geography, respecting the environment, and being adventurous. We stopped during the reading several times to look up words, locations, and pictures on the iPad to help explain the story. That was a nice bonus. We quickly downloaded story 2 and are looking forward to more adventures by Max, Oddie, and Molly

best "age appropriate" story we've read together yet - smart, fun and suspenseful without being scary, snarky or mean-spirited like so many kids books these days. Wish I had found this earlier and wish it was in our school library. My daughter (8 1/2) and son (10) both gobbled it up, story after story (five big adventures). We assisted our daughter in the reading but our son read the whole thing beginning to end on his own after listening along to the first story (African River Adventure). Our daughter's favorite was the third one (At the Arctic Circle) with the teenage girl helping out, but she also loved the fourth one (At the Pirate Bay) with the two kids in the beginning and the Chihuahua at the second half. Our son's favorite was the fifth one (On the Coral Island), probably because it has the biggest action sequence when the boat sinks (it's on the cover picture, so not a big spoiler), but he was riveted to all of them with the Viking lore and the different animals (polar bear, fox, wolf, hippo, baboon, snake, shark, etc, etc) to learn about. The extra bits of history and study words are nice additions without getting in the way of the flow of the story, but the youngest kids might want to skip over those extras which are really meant probably for the fourth, fifth or sixth grade readers, but they do highlight how useful these books would be in a classroom where it is hard enough to get kids interested in learning. (Yes, I used to be a teacher, too.)
