I have read several books on Michigan Football and this book brings a whole new dimension. Curt's perspective is unique, in that he was a walk on player. Through an inner drive fed by his love for Michigan and Bo Schembechler, he over came many obstacles which started with driving his Mustang 2500 miles from California to Ann Arbor, Michigan to tell Bo he wanted to play Football for The University of Michigan.
Curt has a special talent for story telling, he brings you into the huddle, locker room, side lines, games, and even dorm life and many personal events only a fraternity of football players would be privy to.
The stories are smart, funny, heart warming, and will even fire you up for Football season, they may give some young person inspiration that feels their goals are out of reach, Curt shows with hard work and a strong resolve, any dream can and will come true.
I laughed out load and even had called my father to share some of the stories, yes even my poor wife had to endure some of them cause I just had to share a story or two. There are inspirational stories as well as the values Bo instilled in him. With a strong will to succeed Curt went from walk on kicker to star split end, even caught a winning TD in a Rose Bowl.
I highly recommend this book for the Michigan fan or someone you know that is one, they will thank you, I promise!
Reading typically puts me to sleep, but not this time. The last time I read a book that kept me reading on a work night was The Firm (John Grisham) 17 years ago.
Curt's story is unbelievable, heartfelt and inspiring. I am motivated to be a better person by "Those Who Stay" and Curt's life.
This is not just a Rudy story. Or a football story. It is a story about life and how to live it, and this would be a better world if there were more Curt Stephenson's.
Not only was this book a wonderful walk down memory lane, as I was a classmate of the author and many of his teammates mentioned in it, but it is a testament to good old fashioned hard work, determination, and commitment. I laughed and cried and was brought back to a time, like so many alumni of storied universities like Michigan, that was magical and special. Reading about chasing a dream, having goals regardless of seemingly insurmountable odds, and the success that comes with dedication and persistence is inspirational at any stage of life. You get a glimpse of what it's like to be part of an historical team coached by one of the icons of the sport, and the character-building lessons that practice and competition teaches. It is an excellent tribute to the players, coaches, and others who supported Curt's efforts along the way, and most importantly, to what it means to be a Wolverine. Go Blue!
